Abstract

The Antologi Cerpen Indonesia-Malaysia is a collection of works by writers who share a common linguistic background: the Malay language. In addition to linguistic similarities, the social life of the communities also exhibits commonalities. This is reflected in the three short stories featured in the anthology: Bendera Yang Kembali Berkibar, Dialog Dua Generasi, dan Mencuri Perahu. This study aims to describe the reflection of the world of ideas and concepts in relation to the reality of societal life, considering that the writers share a historical background of having experienced colonization. A prominent discourse in each story is the crisis of trust, which is vividly portrayed in the characters' debates. The research method used is descriptive-analytical, with a sociological approach to literature. The analysis goes beyond merely explaining the narratives; it also seeks to provide an understanding that aligns with the study's focus. The findings of this research reveal the reality of the crisis of trust in leadership within society, the representation of this crisis in the three short stories, and the connection between the literary works and the social realities of the communities they reflect.

Abstract

This study aims to find the character Winn-Dixie’s narrative function in Kate DiCamillo’s Because of Winn-Dixie using A.J. Greimas’ actantial model. While previous research often focused on the novel’s emotional and psychological themes, this paper offers a structuralist approach to highlighting how narrative functions operate beneath the surface through the usage of actantial models and isotopes. The study uses descriptive qualitative method to examine narrative sequences to show how Winn-Dixie facilitates Opal’s movement from loneliness to connection, and from emotional fragmentation to relational wholeness. The findings demonstrate Winn-Dixie’s structural role as a helper actant and catalyst for the protagonist’s emotional transformation and that Winn-Dixie is not merely a symbolic or emotional figure but an essential structural force that shapes the novel’s progression and coherence. This research contributes an innovative perspective by applying classical structuralist theory to contemporary children’s literature, thereby enriching both narrative studies and literary criticism in the field.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to examine the impact of game-based learning, specifically through the use of Simon Says and Flashcards, on improving English vocabulary mastery among elementary school students. Vocabulary mastery is a crucial component of English proficiency that supports students’ ability to understand, speak, read, and write effectively. However, many elementary school students struggle to acquire sufficient vocabulary, leading to low motivation and learning outcomes. This research was conducted at SDN 12 Kendari, involving 26 fifth-grade students. A pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test model was implemented over five sessions, focusing on the themes “Body Parts” and “Things in the Classroom” through Simon Says and Flashcards activities. The pre-test average score was 23.65, which significantly increased to 72.58 in the post-test. The Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test showed a significance value of 0.001 (< 0.05), indicating a statistically significant improvement. These findings demonstrate that game-based learning not only enhances students’ vocabulary mastery but also provides practical insights for teachers in designing engaging and collaborative classroom activities. This approach can be effectively applied to foster motivation and improve English language skills among elementary school students.

Abstract

This research aims to formulate the similarities and the differences of the death motif employed in Ragnarok and the Book of Revelation. Both of these stories use the same motif of death but with different portrayal and explanation of the death. The data used in this research are Ragnarok in the epic poem Voluspa and the Book of Revelation in the Bible. This research utilizes qualitative descriptive method and the theory of Genetic Structuralism to dissect the data. The steps are identifying the motifs, interpreting the motifs, and comparing the result. The findings show that even though the death motifs are prevalent in these two works, the themes riding the motifs are different. This happens because of the different collective subjects and the worldviews in which the works are created.
