Abstract

Abstract

Mathematics is a fundamental subject that is crucial for developing children's logical and critical thinking skills. However, many elementary school students in rural areas demonstrate low learning interest and struggle to grasp mathematical concepts. The purpose of this study was to describe efforts made to increase children's interest in learning mathematics in Nagari Simpang Kapuak through meaningful instruction. This activity was conducted during a one-month Community Service Program (KKN) with children aged 7 to 9 years. Initial observations, simple lesson planning, daily tutoring using counting quizzes and concrete media (stones, sticks, and buttons), and daily reflections were the implementation methods. The results showed that children were more interested and engaged in learning and had improved basic numeracy skills. Learning delivered in a fun and contextual manner has been shown to overcome initial challenges and improve understanding of mathematical concepts. Previous research emphasizing the importance of concrete media in elementary education supports these findings, which align with the theory of meaningful learning

Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of instructional video media in improving Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning outcomes for eighth-grade students of class VIII-3 at SMPN 1 Padang Gelugur. This study uses a qualitative approach carried out through three stages, namely the planning stage, implementation stage, and reporting of research results. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation. In the planning stage, the teacher prepares the Lesson Plan (RPP), selects video media appropriate to the material on believing in the books of Allah, and adjusts the video duration so that learning runs effectively and efficiently. The implementation stage is carried out by presenting the instructional video, followed by dividing students into discussion groups to discuss the Zabur, Taurat, Injil, and Al-Qur’an. The teacher then provides additional explanations, evaluations, and assignments to the students. The results of observations and interviews indicate that the use of learning video media can increase students' interest, activeness, and understanding in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning. This has an impact on improving students' learning outcomes, as shown by an average score of 80, which is above the Minimum Competency Criteria (KKM), compared to before the use of learning video media. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of learning video media is effective in improving learning outcomes in Islamic Religious Education and creating a more engaging and meaningful learning process. Abstract

The study addressed the gap in understanding how local wisdom and religious moderation are integrated into regional regulations in West Sumatra, a region with rich customary and religious traditions but ranked low on the national tolerance index. Despite having a strong philosophical foundation in Adat Basandi Syara’, Syara’ Basandi Kitabullah, current legal instruments may not adequately reflect these values to foster a tolerant and inclusive society. The study aimed to examine the portrait of regional regulations on public order and public tranquility in West Sumatra from 2009 to 2023, to realize a tolerant and inclusive society. The method used an empirical legal research with a socio-legal approach drawn from primary data in West Sumatra. The findings showed that the Regional Regulations (Perda) in West Sumatra have not yet embodied the principles of public order and social tranquility based on tolerance and inclusivity. Of the 634 Perdas analyzed from 2009 to 2023, only 2.2% addressed issues related to public order. Moreover, they narrowly focused on nuisance permits, alcoholic beverage control, and public morality. Therefore, this indicated a significant gap in incorporating local wisdom and religious values rooted in the Minangkabau philosophy of Adat Basandi Syara', Syara' Basandi Kitabullah, into regulatory frameworks that promote harmony in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

This study investigates the factors contributing to students' low interest in learning Islamic Religious Education, examines the pedagogical strategies employed by teachers to foster learning interest, and explores the perceived effectiveness of these strategies in an Indonesian junior high school context. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed at SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Basung, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with one Islamic Religious Education teacher, the vice principal for curriculum affairs, and seven seventh-grade students, complemented by classroom observations and document analysis. The data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing with source triangulation to enhance trustworthiness. The findings reveal that students' low learning interest results from the interaction between internal factors, including limited intrinsic motivation and perceptions of IRE as theoretical and memorization-oriented, and external factors, such as teacher-centred instruction, limited instructional media, inadequate learning time, unconducive classroom conditions, and insufficient family support. Teachers addressed these challenges through student-centred strategies, including Project-Based Learning, Problem-Based Learning, collaborative discussions, multimedia integration, classroom management, and continuous motivational support, which increased classroom participation from approximately 30% to 45–60%. However, improvements remained context-dependent and students' independent learning habits were still limited. This study extends the literature by demonstrating that students' learning interest develops through the interaction between pedagogical practices, supportive classroom environments, and students' self-directed use of digital religious learning resources beyond formal instruction. The study provides a contextual pedagogical framework for fostering learning interest in Islamic Religious Education and offers practical implications for teachers and schools seeking to develop more engaging, student-centred, and digitally integrated religious learning environments.
