Abstract

The objectives of the research are to how the effectiveness of using newspaper article to teach reading comprehension. Moreover, this research designed to study how the newspaper article can be implemented in the tenth grade students of SMA N 6 Muaro Jambi. The method used in this research is quantitative research design. The subject of the research is the ten grade students of SMA N 6 Muaro Jambi. There are 30 students of the ten class X MIA 1 and 30 students of the ten class X MIA 2. The result showed there is a significant effect on the students’ reading comprehension between those who were taught by using newspaper article and those who were taught without newspaper article. In this research, the null hypothesis is rejected because the value of t-test is higher than the value of t-table (1.93 > 1.47). Then, the alternative hypothesis is accepted, the value of t-test is higher than the value of t-table (1.93 > 1.47). Thus, it proved that there is the effect of using think pair share technique to develop students’ reading skills on tenth grade students’ of SMA N 6 Muaro Jambi Jambi. In conclusion, it was found that there is improvement score on the students who were taught by newspaper article. This can be seen from pre-test result, treatment and post test result after treatment. Teaching English learning by using newspaper article in experimental class was effective.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out students’ problems faced in speaking English during the covid-19 pandemic and the solutions to overcome these problems. The researcher used qualitative research. The researcher took six students of class XI Accounting 1 as research subjects. In this research, researchers used interview sheets and interviewed students to collect data. Based on the results of the study, regarding the problems of students in learning to speak at Vocational High School 2 Jambi City, there were several student problems during the pandemic, located in the sixth question about the difficulty of speaking English, namely, lack of confidence, embarrassed to speak English, online learning made students feel less confident, self-confident in learning time in class, so that the problems faced by students were lack of pronunciation, fear of making mistakes when speaking English, lack of motivation of students in speaking English, students got into trouble because it was based on problems experienced and experienced by themselves. In learning to speak English, based on interviews, there were solutions to the problem, such as, using more English, translating sentences on Google, by listening to English music.

Abstract

This aim of this research was to see the effect of using whisper game towards students’ vocabulary mastery at eighth grade of SMPN 3 Kota Jambi, whether it has significant effect or not. The design of this research was an experimental research that was done in pre-test and post-test. Before getting the sample, the population, VIIIA, VIIIB and VIIIC class, were previously given homogeneity test. After the class population achieving homogenous, the class samples were taken by using cluster random sampling technique. Then, the data of this research was collected by using vocabulary test. Type of the test was matching choice. The implementation of whisper game in teaching vocabulary at eighth grade of SMPN 3 Kota Jambi was conducted to two classes; they were experimental class and control class. The participant of this research was 37 students, there were 19 students in experimental class, and 18 students were in control class. In collecting the data, they were given the same test. The data from the test was analyzed quantitatively by using t-test formula. Based on the calculation of the t-test, the researcher found out that the value of t-test was 2, 3211 and t-table was 1,697 at the degrees of freedom (19 + 18 – 2) = 35, and at the level of confidence was 0.05. Due to the fact that t-test (2, 3211) was higher than t-table (1,697), so the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. There was a significant effect of whisper game technique towards students’ vocabulary mastery at eighth grade students of SMPN 3 Kota Jambi.
