Abstract

Secondary metabolites were needed by researchers as raw materials for drugs, raw materials for the synthesis of target molecules, bioactive compounds, and model compounds. But until now, there were no producers that supply secondary metabolite compounds in Indonesia, so it is very difficult to find them in the domestic market. The need for secondary metabolite compounds has been purchased from abroad at very high prices. On the other hand, Indonesia has a lot of plant diversity which is the source of secondary metabolite compounds. Modification of several procedures for isolation of secondary metabolites has been carried out in the framework of the production of secondary metabolites.

Abstract

Mesua ferrea L. leaves methanol extract has the highest antioxidant activity than the other part of the plant. However methanol is toxic solvent, so the using of methanol for extraction may harmful for health and environment. The purpose of this study was to optimize the solvent combination of ethanol and water for extraction of Mesua ferrea L. leaves by using Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method. The samples were extracted by Ultrasonic Assisted Extraction (UAE) using variation of solvents ethanol 96%, ethanol 50% and water. The solvent combination was optimized by using SLD method based on the Total Phenolic Content of all crude extract. The result showed that the TPC of ethanol 96%, ethanol 50% and water crude extracts were 574.7±66.97 mgGAE/g, 657.8±37.02 mgGAE/g and 524.23±14.48 mgGAE/g respectively. SLD was calculated and the optimal solvent obtained was ethanol 55% with TPC of 626.235± 23 mgGAE/g. The ethanol 55% extract of Mesua ferrea L. leaves has strong antioxidant activity (IC50 57.77) ppm using DPPH method.

Abstract

21st century learning includes achieving the ability to communicate, think critically, think and act creatively, and collaborate. One of the efforts recommended by experts to achieve this is through the application of project-based learning. Various forms of blending are implemented using project-based learning. One form of method in project-based learning is the practicum method. This literature review aims to describe various forms of project-based learning as well as the development of practical guide modules and their relationship to several practical activities that lead to the chemical identification of natural medicinal plant ingredients. The various results of this research will give birth to alternative project-based learning by developing practical guide modules that can strengthen students' understanding of high-level thinking skills related to the classification of living things, especially plants, as well as science process skills and scientific attitudes.

Abstract

Scientific creativity is an important competency in Higher Education, especially in the fields of science and technology. This research aims to analyze the level of scientific creativity of D-III Pharmacy students in practicum-based Pharmacognosy courses. In Torrance's indicators, there are four indicators used to measure the level of scientific creativity of students, namely fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. The research method used is quantitative descriptive method with data collection through observation, and questionnaire forms. The research subjects were 3rd semester (odd) pharmacy D-III study program students with a total of 30 students. The results showed that the level of scientific creativity of students tended to be in the less category. As for the level of student creativity in each Torrance indicator, namely fluency is in the medium category (51%), originality is in the less category (23%), flexibility is in the less category (25%), and elaboration is in the less category (26%).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the content and construct validity of the Ethnoscience–Project-Based Learning (E-PjBL) model for biology education in higher education. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach guided by Nieveen’s educational design framework, focusing on the initial validation stage of model development. The validation process involved six expert validators with expertise in biology education, ethnoscience, instructional model development, and educational research. Research instruments consisted of content validity and construct validity validation sheets using a five-point Likert scale. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative analysis by calculating mean validity scores and inter-rater reliability using the percentage of agreement method. The results of the study indicate that: (1) the content validity of the E-PjBL model is categorized as very valid, with an overall mean score of 4.97, indicating that the model is developed based on actual learning needs and supported by state-of-the-art theoretical and empirical foundations; (2) the construct validity of the E-PjBL model is also classified as very valid, with an overall mean score of 4.91, demonstrating strong internal consistency among model components, including instructional syntax, learning objectives and impacts, as well as the learning environment and social system. These findings provide empirical evidence that the E-PjBL model is conceptually sound and theoretically feasible for further testing at the stages of practicality and effectiveness in higher education biology learning

Abstract

The development of the cosmetics industry in Indonesia is currently very rapid with average market growth reaching 9.67 % per year. The high market potential gives rise to tight business competition in the cosmetics industry, thus encouraging manufacturers to continue to innovate to create new product variations to meet society's demands for cosmetics as a complement to an attractive everyday appearance. This study aims to evaluate the physical characteristics of facial masks, body scrubs and sunscreens from Nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum) seed extract at various concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%). The test results showed that the three preparations met the standard physical property test parameters (organoleptic, pH, viscosity, spreadability, etc.). The facial mask formula with 10% extract was most liked by the panelists. Body scrub and sunscreen formulas with 10-15% extract also provide the best physical test results. The SPF value of sunscreen increases with increasing extract concentration up to the ultra category (SPF 17.42 at 15%). This study concludes that Nyamplung seed extract has the potential to be used as a natural ingredient for facial masks, body scrubs and sunscreen with an optimum concentration of 10-15%. Further research is needed regarding antioxidant activity and product stability testing. Overall, the three cosmetic preparations from Nyamplung seed extract show good prospects for development by paying attention to the best extract concentration of each product

Abstract

Multidisciplinary training involving ethnomedicine and ethics, phytochemistry, and antioxidant bioassay analysis requires students to integrate normative reasoning, chemical concepts, and quantitative data analysis. Therefore, foundational competency and assessment quality must be established before diagnostic application. This study evaluated the first psychometric effectiveness of a multidomain idea test and outlined pre-intervention baseline performance across the three domains. The examination was administered to fifth-semester undergraduate pharmacy students enrolled in the Phytochemistry course at the Faculty of Health and Science, UNIQHBA Bagu. A 28-item mixed-format assessment, comprising multiple-choice, constructed-response, and numerical items (maximum score of 32), was administered to N = 41 pupils. Subsequently, descriptive statistics and indices from Classical Test Theory were computed, including Cronbach's alpha, item difficulty (p), D27 discrimination, and adjusted item-total correlations. The most challenging and simplest collections of objects were employed to encapsulate the extreme items. The average total score was 19.90 out of 32 (62.20% ± 13.05%), the median was 20, the range was 11 to 29, and 9 students (about 22.0%) achieved the ≥70 criterion. The performance in the domain was inconsistent. Ethnomedicine and ethics achieved a score of 7.88 ± 1.25 (78.80% of the maximum), phytochemistry received 7.29 ± 2.15 (72.90%), and DPPH–IC50 interpretation got 4.73 ± 2.54 (39.40%). The reliability was acceptable (alpha = 0.756), but the item diagnostics revealed floor and ceiling effects, along with DPPH–IC50 items that were notably challenging. The technique is suitable for initial diagnostic profiling and highlights DPPH–IC50 quantitative interpretation as the main baseline gap, thereby promoting targeted scaffolding and item adjustment to improve differentiation across the ability spectrum
