Abstract

Introduction & Objectives : Background: The need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) during a pandemic can cause dry eye syndrome. It will increase sweating so reduce tear production and the use of masks increase air flow to the eye area so that tear evaporation increases. Objective: To determine the relationship between the incidence of dry eye syndrome and the use of PPE in hospital medical personnel. Methods : Methods: This was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design using the OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index) questionnaire. The research was carried out at the Cilacap Hospital in 2021. There were 49 samples (51% male and 49% female), with an age range of 20-50 years. The data was analyzed by using the Spearmans test. Results : Results: The incidence of dry eye syndrome was 69.5% (mild 18.4%, moderate 18.4%, severe 32.7%). As many as 53.1% of the incidence of dry eye syndrome occurred in wearing PPE for more than 4 hours and was more common in the use of PPE level 1 (40.8%), followed by level 3 (36.7%) and level 2 (22.5%). In the Spearman's test, it was found that there was a significant association between the incidence of dry eyes syndrome and the use of PPE (duration and level of PPE) (p<0.05) but had a weak relationship strength (r=0.3). Conclusion : Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the incidence of dry eyes syndrome and the use of PPE (duration and level of PPE use) but has a weak relationship strength.

Abstract

Myopia is a refractive disorder that occurs when parallel rays from a distance are focused in front of the retina. This condition is not only experienced by older adults but also commonly affects children and adolescents during their growth period. Myopia can cause difficulty in seeing distant objects and has the potential to influence various aspects of life, such as academic achievement, visual comfort, and the development of other conditions like dry eyes and asthenopia. This study aims to analyze the relationship between myopic refractive status and academic performance, the incidence of dry eyes, and asthenopia among students in Islamic boarding schools. The research employed a quantitative approach with an observational analytic method and a cross-sectional design, involving 81 respondents. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test to determine the relationship between variables. The results revealed a statistically significant relationship (p < 0.001) between myopia and the three variables: academic performance, dry eye incidence, and asthenopia. These findings indicate that myopia may simultaneously affect students’ academic performance and ocular health. Therefore, regular eye examinations and early management are essential to prevent further negative impacts on learning activities and the overall quality of life of the students.

Abstract

Myopia is an eye refractive disorder in which the light entering the eye is focused in front of the retina, causing long-distance vision to become blurry. This condition is often experienced by teenagers, including students in Islamic boarding schools, due to the habit of reading in close proximity, excessive use of gadgets, and lack of exposure to natural light. The high prevalence of myopia in young age groups needs serious attention so that it does not develop into permanent vision disorders. One of the prevention efforts that can be done is to provide education about myopia, including the definition, causes, prevention, and importance of maintaining eye health and a healthy lifestyle. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of myopia education on improving knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of students of the Ta'mirul Islam Islamic Islamic Boarding School in Surakarta. Based on the results of the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Paired Sample t-Test, there was a significant improvement in the aspects of knowledge and attitude, although behavioral changes have not shown meaningful results. These findings confirm the importance of continuous education to form healthy behaviors related to the prevention of myopia as a whole.
