Abstract

The concept of sustainable housing has considered the urgency to support the sustainable environment in an integrative way. This concept is related to several main principles include environmental, social, and economic sustainability. In practice, these principles translated into the fundamental of housing choice, both process and product choices. In many peri-urban areas, current house construction tends to imitate city houses with massive concrete structures equipped with air conditioning that caused high energy consumption. The Center for Rural Empowerment team of ITB built a prototype of an eco-friendly house in Haurgombong village, Sumedang, West Java. The house has two floors building on a 7x5 m2 land site. The first floor was renovated from the existing toilet rooms and develop into a two-floor house. The second floor was built using the local wood material. The wood material has been obtaining from the trees of seven years old beechwood (Gmelina Arborea) planted in the garden. The envelope material for this house was constructed from local and common material in rural or peri-urban context, the lightweight fiberglass for the roof of common room, and the transparent fiber materials for the roof of second-floor terrace to make the plantation at this area can easily receive the sunlight. This house is also can be regarded as a prototype of an earthquake-resistant house. The lighting factor, temperature, and airflow settings are made naturally. Besides, this house has also equipped with a rainwater storage system and greywater treatment using a small, constructed wetland that allows the treated water used for watering gardens and fishponds. The budget spent to build this house was as low as possible so that the surrounding community can imitate the building for their house and disseminate eco-friendly housing.

Abstract

In several rural areas, the lack of clean water availability forced them to use polluted water to accommodate their daily needs. For example, in Cinangsi Village, Cianjur District, West Java, the local communities is forced to use contaminated river water for their daily use. The river water is contaminated by the disposal of fish farming waste directly into the river. To solve this problem, constructed wetland combined with aquaponic system is implemented. The constructed wetland can provide better water quality, while the aquaponic system can create a sustainable cultivation system that can be profitable for the local communities. In this paper we describe a prototype of the constructed wetland combined with aquaponic system that we have built in Cinangsi Village and the results in solving the clean water shortages problem, especially in Cinangsi Village.

Abstract

Dragon fruit plants are long-day plants that require a long photoperiod to induce flowering, making light management an important factor in their productivity. In recent years, their declining yields in Indonesia have been linked to suboptimal flowering induction and fruit cracking, partly related to nutritional imbalances, particularly boron deficiency. This study aims to improve dragon fruit flowering by providing yellow light and adding boron. The study was conducted at the SITH Haurngombong Educational Orchard in Sumedang, using a randomized block design with three factors: light, boron, and plant age. The parameters observed included the number of flowers, the number of fruits, fruit weight, and cracked fruits. The results showed that the combination of light and boron significantly increased dragon fruit production, with the highest number of flowers (14.33±0.52) and number of fruits (14.33±0.52) found on 7-year-old plants; the heaviest fruit was from 3-year-old plants (483.71±13.83 g); and the lowest percentage of cracked fruit was observed in 7-year-old plants (3%). The light treatment enhances dragon fruit production, while boron supplementation reduces the number of cracked fruits. In general, the combination of yellow light and boron treatment was the most optimal in enhancing flowering in 3-year-old and 7-year-old plants compared to the control. As plants age, the quantity and quality of the fruit they produce increase. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for cultivating dragon fruit and offer practical guidance for optimizing flowering induction and improving fruit quality in commercial production systems.
