Abstract

This study aims at examining whether or not the use of story mapping technique can improve students’ ability in writing recount text. It was conducted to the second grade of SMPN 1 Darul Imarah. The sample was chosen randomly. There were 25 students as the sample. Quantitative approach with pre-experimental type of one group pre-test post-test design was undertaken to overcome the problems faced by students in learning writing skill. The data was obtained by giving a set of tests in the form of written test. Some statistical formulas were used to analyse the data. From the results of the study, it reveals that the post-test score of five aspects in writing is higher than the score of pre-test. To test the hypothesis, the writer used t-score formula. Based on data analysis, t-score was 21.03, meanwhile t-table was 2.064. It means that t-score was higher, so that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It proves there is a significant improvement on the students’ writing ability after they are taught by using story mapping technique. Thus, story mapping can be one of the alternative techniques used by the teacher in teaching writing.

Abstract

The design of this study is descriptive qualitative research. It focuses on how the teacher applies teaching strategies by using video media to improve the students’ speaking ability. The research was conducted at the second grade of SMAN Modal Bangsa, Aceh Besar. To obtain the data, the researcher used interview guide and observation checklist. It was found that the teacher applied the three teaching strategies categorized by Bouhard (2005) and Chamont Omelly (1994), meta-cognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, and socio affective strategies, in teaching speaking by using video media. The result of this study indicates that the strategies applied by the teacher were essential to arrange the teaching learning process efficiently, to contribute information to the students, and to facilitate the students to practice the language in group. Besides, based on the interview and observation, it was found that video media is effective to stimulate students’ learning as they felt enthusiastic to learn as the video was played. Also, video is easy to use and is accessible for free download on the internet; thus, it was easier for the teacher to make preparation for the teaching learning activity. In the end, the result of this study indicates the pedagogical implications for English teachers in teaching EFL by using video as media and can be used as the reference for other researchers who aim to conduct similar studies.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to figure out whether the use of picture series can improve students’ ability in narrative writing skill, especially on the content aspect of the third grade students at MTsN Rukoh Banda Aceh. Most of the third grade students at MTsN Rukoh Banda Aceh felt difficult to generate and develop their ideas in writing form. By this reason, the researcher conducted experimental-quantitative research with the pre-test and post-test control group design to the students by using picture series to help them improve their writing. The samples of this study were class XI–1 as the experimental class and class XI-5 as the control class, which were chosen by using random sampling. In this study, the data was collected by means of writing test, consisting of pre-test and post-test. The result of this study showed that the improvement of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class. It was known from the comparison of the improvement of their average score in both classes on the content aspect of writing that is 7.26 in the experimental class and 3.28 in the control class. Besides, the result of the hypothesis testing shows that the score is 0.000 which is lower than 0.05 (0.0000.05), which means the research hypothesis that “the use of picture series can improve the students’ ability in narrative writing skill especially on the content aspect” is accepted.
