Abstract

Laughter is an easily reachable way that can be used to erase barriers of communication for educational purposes. The purpose of this paper is to seek out students’ perception of humor added in teaching English and how that humor influenced students’ engagement in English classroom activity. This study employs research instrument of questionnaire and observation concepts through qualitative design. There are 78 students of multi-background: gender, level of intelligence and social background as research participants. These backgroundsareintended to obtain objective perception of the students. The findings revealed that the majority of students believed the teacher’s humor could prevent them from feeling stress of learning English, develop a better relationship between teacher and students, help them remember and understand the lesson, encourage them to be more active in the classroom and ease them in learning English. However there are some obstacles to overcome during humor application that apparently the English teachers need to build a good relationship and mutual trust with students and understand students’ interests, likes and dislikes prior to applying humor, so that the humor would be more likely to be welcomed and it would not cause emotional and psychological impact such as bullying and etc for the students.

Abstract

This study aims at examining whether or not the use of story mapping technique can improve students’ ability in writing recount text. It was conducted to the second grade of SMPN 1 Darul Imarah. The sample was chosen randomly. There were 25 students as the sample. Quantitative approach with pre-experimental type of one group pre-test post-test design was undertaken to overcome the problems faced by students in learning writing skill. The data was obtained by giving a set of tests in the form of written test. Some statistical formulas were used to analyse the data. From the results of the study, it reveals that the post-test score of five aspects in writing is higher than the score of pre-test. To test the hypothesis, the writer used t-score formula. Based on data analysis, t-score was 21.03, meanwhile t-table was 2.064. It means that t-score was higher, so that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It proves there is a significant improvement on the students’ writing ability after they are taught by using story mapping technique. Thus, story mapping can be one of the alternative techniques used by the teacher in teaching writing.

Abstract

This study aims at examining whether the use of authentic materials as a teaching material develops students’ writing competence or not. Quantitative approach with pre-experimental study of one-group pretest-posttest design was applied in order to develop students’ writing competence in term content, grammar, mechanics, and other aspects which were acknowledged by the students as difficulties in writing learning. The population of this study was first grade students of SMA Labschool Unsyiah, while the sample was X-IPS students. The instrument used to collect the data was test which was assessed by using analytic method suggested by Brown (2007). The result of this study confirmed that the students’ scores increased after receiving the treatment. It showed that posttest scores were higher than pretest where the mean of total score of posttest is 81 while the mean of pretest is 75. Moreover, the data of both tests were analyzed by using t-test formula to find out the t-score which was gain was 4.256. Since t-score (4.256) of this study was higher than t-table (2.120), the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The researcher concluded that using authentic materials in teaching writing develops students’ writing competence.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the correlation between students’ metacognitive awareness and their reading comprehension. The framework of metacognitive awareness is provided by Mokhtari Reichard (2002). A number of 30 students of SMA Laboratorium UNSYIAH Banda Aceh are designated as the sample. In this research the instruments are reading comprehension test and questionnaire. The reading comprehension test and questionnaire were given to the students in order to find the correlation between students’ metacognitive awareness and their reading comprehension. The data was analyzed by using SPSS. The value of correlation of both variables was 0.000 which was less than critical limit of α 0.05 and there was a significant relationship between metacognitive awareness and students’ reading comprehension. There was also a positive correlation between both variables. It means that the more metacognitive awareness the students have the better understanding they have in reading comprehension. In addition, the type of metacognitive awareness strategies which was mostly used by the students was Global Reading Strategies. It is suggested as further studies that another researcher look in depth the cause of Global Reading Strategies applied by the student.
