Abstract

This article aims to describe the cultural dimension in the management of territorial border between Indonesia and Malaysia in Bengkayang. To explain the cultural approach, this article shed a light on the history of the border between Indonesia and Malaysia, problems of socio-cultural appeared in the border, and border management approach accommodating to the interests of cultural communities. This article is resulted from a field research in Bengkayang, West Kalimantan in 2015. Findings of this study conclude that the political approach in viewing border issue is not in accordance with the dynamics of inter-ethnic relations. The cultural dimension is often forgotten in the political analysis of border management due to the state border, in the conventional approach, is seen as a political borderline.

Abstract

Much of scholars state that a number of new religious authorities support religious conservatism. This article shows that the old religious authorities also became the driving force of Islamic conservatism and identity politics in East Priangan, West Java, especially those historically tied to the Darul Islam movement. This article aims to narrate the transformation of the idea of Islamic State (Darul Islam) into the Sharia-compliant Republic of Indonesia, which is taking place in the East Priangan region. In 2016, supporters of this idea were among the most enthusiastic participants of the 212 rallies in Jakarta. This article uses qualitative research by using the data collection methods of literature study, observation, and interviews with heads of pesantren in Tasikmalaya and Ciamis. It shows that religious movements in East Priangan play a significant role in supporting Islamic populism at the national level. The argument is that some traditional pesantren or religious organizations support religious conservatism that continues in the era of identity politics.

Abstract

This is article derived from a thesis study in the Sociology Department of the University of Indonesia in 2008 exploring socio-economic, socio-political and socio-cultural contexts playing their roles in the formation of the political and religious fields along with their respective ”˜habitus’ of the social agents in the Papua land. This paper discusses the history of the term “papua” itself based on a historical study conducted by Solewijn Gelpke (1993). Based on historical approach, the relationship between Muslims and Christians in Papua can be traced as a religious and cultural heritage. Also, by using a sociological conception elaborated by Bourdieu (1992: 9), we may view the Papua land as a social space encompassing all conceptions of the social world. Bourdieu’s social space conception considers the social reality as a topology (Harker, 1990).

Abstract

The geopolitical ascendancy of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) within the South Pacific Region has been extensively scrutinized due to its potential to both align with global development agendas and provoke sovereignty concerns among recipient nations. It is hypothesized that the BRI could either exacerbate debt dependencies or foster economic emancipation depending on the governance responses of the recipient countries. Therefore, this study seeks to analyze the strategic deployments and the consequential geopolitical ramifications of the BRI, particularly focusing on South Pacific nations. A qualitative method, utilizing literature reviews and analyses of secondary data sources, was systematically employed to extract and synthesize relevant insights. Empirical evidence from multiple South Pacific case studies reveals that these nations have the capacity to harness the initiative for economic enhancement without necessarily succumbing to compromised sovereignty. These findings illuminate the dual potential of the BRI to either ensnare recipient nations in dependency cycles or empower them through strategic economic engagement, contingent upon the negotiation dynamics and governance acumen of the recipient countries.
