Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Massive bone damage requires a procedure of bone graft addition to helping regenerate the bone tissue. Monetite has excellent potential as a dental bone graft candidate. Hydrothermal is widely used in bone graft synthesis due to its catalyst property. The purpose of this research was to fabricate the monetite from gypsum granules as a precursor with the hydrothermal method as the dental bone graft candidate. Methods: This research was an experimental laboratory. Gypsum granules were made by grinding gypsum blocks resulting from the setting reaction of calcium sulfate hemihydrate and aquadest with a powder to liquid ratio of 2.5. Furthermore, the gypsum granules were converted into monetite granules by immersing them in a solution of 2 mol/L of NaH2PO4 at a temperature of 150°C under hydrothermal conditions for 24 hours. Results: Based on the XRD test results, monetite granules was able to be formed. The results of the macroscopic optical image of the monetite granules showed no change compared to the gypsum granules. Conclusions: Monetite granules as dental bone graft candidate are successfully prepared using the hydrothermal method by immersing gypsum granules in a solution of 2 mol/L of NaH2PO4 at 150oC for 24 hours.

Abstract

Trauma arising from tooth extraction will experience a natural healing process but alveolar defects will only partially heal. Along with bone growth, there is also a resorption process in the alveolar ridge. Socket preservation with bone graft can be a solution to maintain ridge dimensions and contours so that bone resorption can be minimized. Hydroxyapatite is a synthetic biomaterial that repairs damage after tooth extraction and regenerates bone associated with implant placement and denture bases as a replacement procedure for missing teeth. This paper was created to discuss the role of Hydroxyapatite (HA) as bone filler after tooth extraction. Socket preservation or preservation of the socket or alveolar ridge preservation is a procedure performed to reduce the process of bone loss after tooth extraction. This loss of bone volume may result in the denture becoming loose, or an insufficient amount of bone width to place the implant. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is an alloplastic material commonly used as a replacement for bone grafts due to its inherent bioactive properties that support osteoconduction. HA is a synthetic biomaterial that can repair damage after tooth extraction and regenerate bone associated with missing tooth replacement procedures.

Abstract

Introduction: Heating composite resins can reduce viscosity properties, increase adaptation to cavity walls, and facilitate application. There is still a lot of debate about the degree of microleakage and bond strength in preheated composites to determine how strong these composites are as cementation materials. Purpose: To analyze the strength level of preheated composite as cementation material in indirect adhesive restoration in terms of microleakage rate and bond strength. Methods: Preheating composite can reduce the viscosity of the composite to facilitate the placement of the composite and obtain better adaptation to the cavity wall. By analyzing the relevant references, the strength of the preheated composite material will be investigated by looking at the level of microleakage and the level of bonding between surfaces. Conclusion: Heating the composite to an appropriate temperature (50°C) can reduce microleakage and increase the micro-shear bond strength in the exposed dentin.

Abstract

Introduction: Various natural ingredients have been developed in health science to avoid side effects that arise due to the use of chemicals. Pogostemon cablin Benth, or the patchouli plant, is a natural ingredient that has been researched and has potential as an antimicrobial and antioxidant in health problems. The development of natural materials in dentistry is influenced by their physical, chemical, and biological properties. This review aims to determine the various characteristic tests that need to be carried out to support the potential development of Pogostemon cablin Benth as an antimicrobial material in dentistry. Review: All parts of the patchouli plant can be used in the form of extracts and essential oils that contain secondary metabolites and other active ingredients, Patchouli Alcohol and its derivatives, which have an effect on antimicrobial activity. Another form of utilization of Pogostemon cablin Benth., such as emulsions, nanohydrogels, and encapsulations, aimed at increasing their activity. Various tests related to physical, chemical, and biological characteristics can be carried out to optimize the content of Pogostemon cablin Benth. so that it can be used appropriately, especially regarding health problems. Conclusion: The results of this search have provided an overview of Pogostemon cablin Benth, which has physical, chemical, and biological properties that have the potential to become antimicrobial materials for dentistry.

Abstract

Bone waste is a sustainable, calcium-rich resource for the production of hydroxyapatite (HA), a biomaterial widely used in dental and bone tissue engineering. This systematic review evaluates recent advances in the extraction, transformation, and biological performance of HA derived from bone waste. A total of 20 records were initially identified, of which 11 full-text articles met the eligibility criteria and were included in the qualitative synthesis. The reviewed studies demonstrate that bone waste can be effectively converted into HA through several routes, including thermal-based extraction (calcination, annealing, and sintering at 600–1000°C), alkaline hydrolysis, and hydrothermal or microwave-assisted methods, enabling the production of micro- and nano-sized HA with high purity. Post-extraction functionalization, such as ion doping (Mg²⁺, Na⁺, Co²⁺), drug loading, and composite formation, further enhances osteogenic, antimicrobial, and mechanical properties. Physicochemical characterization using XRD and FTIR consistently confirmed the formation of non-stoichiometric, ion-substituted HA with Ca/P ratios ranging from 1.6 to 1.9, closely resembling biogenic apatite. The presence of multiscale porosity (25–65%) and nano-scale features promotes protein adsorption, ion exchange, and cellular interactions. In vitro studies confirmed cytocompatibility, while ALP activity and mineralization assays demonstrated strong osteogenic potential. Overall, bone waste–derived HA offers biomimetic, functional, and environmentally sustainable alternatives for dental and maxillofacial applications.
