Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how social capital affected the resilience strategy in a tourist destination during the COVID-19 pandemic by visiting Nglanggeran Tourism Village case. Nglanggeran has become one of  tourist destinations in DIY, or even in Indonesia, that was formally reoperated earliest whilst a pandemic is still underway. On the other hand, they are regarded as one of the best tourism villages in Indonesia and South-East Asia that are entirely run by locals, with many representatives from other tourism villages frequently visiting Nglanggeran for benchmarking purposes. This is a descriptive study that employs a qualitative research approach. The data for this study was compiled through observation and semi-structured interviews to obtain primary data, while secondary data was collected through literature reviews related to the scope and focus of the study. The findings of the study show that, in the context of Nglanggeran’s tourism management at the time of the crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic, social capital influenced resilience strategy, which would have been closely associated with: a) practicing new norms in the making; b) consolidating trust; and c) bridging partnerships among stakeholders.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the spatial distribution of hotels along the Philosophical Axis1 area of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, as well as their orientation development in terms of physical visualization. DIY – a popular nickname for the Special Region of Yogyakarta – is one of Indonesia’s culturally based tourist destinations. There is a Philosophical Axis in the spatial framework that is characterized by buildings and places that are in a straight line and serve as landmarks, namely Tugu, Kraton Yogyakarta, and Panggung Krapyak. Today, all three structures serve as tourist attractions. These circumstances lead to an increase in the sharing of tourism facilities in the surrounding buildings, one of which is represented by the hotel’s existence. Hotel is pivotal to note because it is classified as one type of amenity that supported the running of tourism activities, and its existence can be seen and placed at a specific location, so that it is identical to the spatial context. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative research approach. It collects primary data through observation and mapping, and secondary data through literature reviews related to the research’s focus and scope. According to the findings of this study, there are more hotels in the core zone of the Philosophical Axis area in terms of quantity. Meanwhile, the orientation of hotel establishments located at the Philosophical Axis area in terms of producing a physical visual image is largely the same, regardless of whether they are international or national hotel chains; or whether they are located on the Philosophical Axis’ main lane or not. In the case of independent hotels, only those in the main lane made significant efforts to physically synchronize with the image of the Philosophical Axis area.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to disclose the importance of preserving the Batu Lumbang mangrove forest in Denpasar, Bali. The mangrove forest is notable for its high biodiversity rate, and it is also become a popular tourist destination at the same time. This study employs convergent parallel mixed-methods data collection, which includes observation, mapping with Google Earth and Landsat 8 satellite imagery, semi-structured interviews with relevant key informants, and a literature review. Afterwards, descriptive techniques are used to analyse the data. The results indicate that the Batu Lumbang mangrove forest has a coverage area of approximately 85.9 Ha, with a rainfall tension of approximately 100 mm/year in the rain season and 60 mm/year in the dry season. Sixteen vegetation species were discovered in the mangrove forest compound, all of which are common in lowland and mangrove ecosystems. There are also 36 species of fauna, the majority of which are bird and avian in nature. Furthermore, changes in land cover indicate a vibrant ecosystem in the Batu Lumbang mangrove forest area. So far, three types of land cover have been identified: mangrove forests, water bodies and the built environment. Mangrove forests remain dominant among these three, accounting for 60.35 %. As a result, it is no wonder that mangroves have become the primary tourist attraction in Batu Lumbang. Some preservation efforts related to tourism activities that can be made based on its ecological value include: establishing a system of visitor management, dealing with waste problems, and spatial management in areas with high biodiversity as a form of rigorous conservation initiative. Keywords: preservation, ecosystem, mangrove, tourist destination, batu lumbang.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the development of Ponggok Tourism Village since its first progression as a tourism destination. Ponggok is one of the best tourism villages in Indonesia according to the 2017 report published by the Ministry of Villagers, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigrations. However, the tourism village tends to be in a stagnant condition and even experience a decline in visitors. The life cycle analysis is chosen as the approach to fulfill the requirements needed to study the time series (longitudinal) data to dissect the development of Ponggok Tourism Village. The indicator and parameter of assessment in this life cycle analysis is the model stated by Laurenço: planning, action, and living. The technique of primary data collecting is through observation, mapping, interview, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Furthermore, the secondary data is acquired through literature studies and institutional surveys in accordance with the scope of the study. The result of the research shows that the development of Ponggok Tourism Village has, at least, four segments of time. The first segment occurred in 2007-2010, the second segment occurred in 2011-2013, the third segment was 2014-2016, and the fourth segment of time occurred in 2017-2018. In the aftermath of this study’s results, it is recommended that Ponggok Tourism Village need to replan their strategies to avoid the stagnation-decline stage and to stimulate the occurrence of rejuvenation.  Keywords: Life Cycle Analysis, Ponggok, Tourism Village.
