Abstract

Phytoremediation has been widely used for wastewater treatment technology. Horsetail was investigated for its capacity to remediate lead and chromium in leachate. This plant seemed to be an effective choice for phytoremediation due to its survival in extreme to moderate conditions, the availability of annual or perennial varieties and a deep root system. Conducted in a greenhouse, this research used leachate from final disposal. The leachate was exposed to six treated plants with three multiplications using activated natural zeolite media for one month. The treatments were flow system i.e. batch and continue, and living plants weight that is 0, 153 and 306 g planted in 20 cm diameter and 30 cm deep pots. The leachate pH, temperature, lead, and chromium concentration were observed and also the surrounding temperature and humidity. Results showed that 82.2% of lead can be removed by 153 gram horsetail on batch system as well as 61.2% chromium removal by 153 gram horsetail on continue system. Horsetail seemed to have future to be applied in phytoremediation of artisanal and small scale mining waste.

Abstract

Steady soil aggregationis important for agricultural land which is formed by the micro-aggregate to become a macro-aggregate. This formation is mediated by organic material and various kinds of macro-organisms such as fungi, worms, ants and insects. An organic agencyinvolved in soil aggregation stabilityis exopolysaccharide (EPS) derived from bacterial, fungal mycelium, and products synthesized by plants. However, the use of EPS producing microorganisms as a biofertilizer has not been reported. This study was aimedto explore indigenous EPS-producing bacteria to solidify soil aggregationpotential for biofertilizer. Bacterial strains were isolated from soilsofthree regions at Malang East-Java; two areas of green bean plantation in Kendal Payak and Jambe Gede, as well as forest land. Soil samplewas derived from forest had hasa total bacteria population of 9.3 x 1011 CFU/mL.While soil samples from area Kendal Payak and Jambe Gede had total bacteria population of 1.5 x 109 CFU/mL and 2.4 x 109 CFU/mL, respectively. We selected three bacteria that could potentially produce abundant slime, namely as SPE-2, SPE-10 and SPE-20. The three selected bacteria are potential for biofertilizer because oftheir abundant slime, no antagonism and no symtoms as pathogen.

Abstract

The use of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) as a biological fertilizer of Agricultural land is one solution to overcome problem of phosphate availability for plants. However, often application of a biological fertilizer is ineffective for certain places. The purpose of this study was to obtain indigenous phosphate solubilizing bacterial isolates that can be effective in the area of Malang. Samples were collected from rhizosphereof green bean plants at three locations in Malang, East Java. The study was conducted to determine the total bacterial population of soil samples, to select the best three bacterial isolates in phosphate solubilizing ability, which is not antagonistic and nonpathogenic for plants, along with observing its potential as a bacterial consortium. The highest total population was found in FHR samples of 1.5x1011 CFU / mL. We have selected three bacterial isolates namely SPP1, SPP2 and SPP3. They were not antagonistic to each other and nonpathogenic on mungbean sprouts. They had possibility of producing growth hormone which characterized by an increasing in length of plant and total root length, be compared to controls. Strain SPP2 has shown the highest activity of phosphate solubilization then was selected for 16S rRNA identification. Similarity test of genome sequence of strain SPP2 had 99% similarity with Pseudomonas plecoglossicida strain PR19
