Abstract

The long-term cultivation of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plant in the Sindoro mountainous zone of Central Java has resulted in soil quality degradation that could affect economic development in the region if sustainable production practices are not identified. The objective of the study was to identify appropriate indicators for assessing soil quality on tobacco plant. The quantitative soil quality indicators were total organic-C, pH, available P and available K (chemical), soil depth, bulk density, AWC (available water capacity) and soil aggregate stability (physical), and qCO2 (soil respiration), MBC (microbial biomass carbon) (biological). The decreases in the soil aggregate stability, available water capacity, cation exchange capacity, soil respiration, microbial biomass carbon and total organic-C; or increases in bulk density (compaction), available P, available K and total nitrogen indicated the decrease in soil quality due to long-term tobacco production. The result of this research showed that the change of soil quality had occurred in Sindoro Mountain. The Soil Quality Index (SQI) for three land use systems in Sindoro mountain (forest, mixed farm, and tobacco) were 0.60, 0.47, and 0.57, respectively. The comparison of these rates with soil quality classes showed that the soil quality presented moderate to good level of quality; class SQI.

Abstract

Rice field has a strategic function because it is the main provider of food for the population of Indonesia. The data of the land use for the rice field in Indonesia showed that around 41% in Java Island. Agricultural technology at the level of industry experienced rapid progress, but the technology implementation at the level by farmer is relatively slow. Increased production of rice in Indonesia was reported of less than 1% per year. The research aimed to study the characteristics and land suitability of newly established rice field in Lesung Batu Muda, Rawas Ulu, Musi Rawas, South Sumatera. There were two soil land units that were tested included water availability, rooting medium, level of erosion, soil chemical properties and land preparation. The results of the study showed that newly established rice fields in Lesung Batu Muda, Rawas Ulu, Musi Rawas, South Sumatera could be used to open new rice fields by planting twice a year. In opening new rice fields, the application of organic matter and creation of terracing on sloping areas were needed.

Abstract

The textile industry produces sideline output in the form of dangerous waste. The textile industrial waste containing heavy metal, one of which is Chromium (Cr).  Chromium is very dangerous metal for environment, especially chromium hexavalent that has properties of soluble, carcinogenic, and toxic. The pollution of chromium in soil is a problem that the action to be taken with the technology of bioremediation. Phytoremediation of soil contaminated with chromium using Mendong plant (Fimbrystilis globulosa), combined with association of microorganisms Agrobacterium sp I3 and compost. This study was conducted in field experiment plots using a completely randomized block design. Data were analyzed using Anova followed by Duncan and correlation tests. The results showed that the Mendong plant was an effective phytoremediator of soil contaminated with chromium and it can be used as a chromium accumulator plant. The highest decrease of soil chromium content of 58.39% was observed on the combined artificial fertilizer, Agrobacterium sp I3 and Mendong plant treatment (P1B1T1). Removal effectiveness of chromium at the treatments using Mendong plant was higher than without the Mendong plant. Chromium uptake in shoots was higher than in roots of Mendong plant. Bioremediation increased the total bacterial colonies, decreased soil pH, and increased cation exchange capacity of the soil. The growth of the Mendong plant was in a good condition during the process of bioremediation.

Abstract

The assessment of soil quality index is one of the parameters to evaluate the goal of land reclamation. The research has been done in the various age of soil of PT Adaro Indonesia and natural forest. The research used descriptive explorative method and open field survey. Purposive sampling was used to take the sample in research location that represented the condition of every location. Principal component analysis used to know the main indicator. The main indicator was based on Eigen value >1 and chosen by indicator correlation having the highest weight index. The main indicator chosen was called minimum data set. The result of the research showed that minimum data set consisted of pH, base saturation, bulk density, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, available P, total N, and soil organic carbon. The main indicators contributing to soil quality index value were total N and cation exchange capacity. Variable linear analysis showed that the longer age of land reclamation was followed by the development of soil quality index. Soil quality index in 18 years old soil reclamation (0.651) was higher than that in natural forest (0.575). Soil quality index of > 0.5 is defined as sustainable reclamation.

Abstract

Industry sector exerts a negative effect on the environment. Industrial waste is often disposed to the rivers. The industry contributes to the accumulation of heavy metals in the environment. In farming sector, the accumulation of heavy metals can result in water pollution and be washed into the ground. Therefore, the farming product can be contaminated with heavy metals and they can be harmful to human health. The objective of this research was to reduce the Pb heavy metal content in paddy soil. This research was taken place in the Pb contaminated paddy soil using a randomized complete block design with three factors and three replicates. This research employed combination of inorganic fertilizer, ramie and Agrobacterium sp. I3 or compost as a chelator to improve Pb uptake. The results showed that combination of the three treatments increased Pb uptake. The combination of chemical fertilizers, ramie with compost increased the Pb uptake of 11.93 μg/g or 45.9%. The combination of chemical fertilizers, ramie with Agrobacterium sp. I3 resulted in the highest Pb uptake of 12.85 μg/g or 49.8%. The combination also decreased the soil Pb level by 7.8 μg/g or 23.5% of the control.

Abstract

One of land degradation problems in Nawangan is surface erosion, throughout the years it widespread. Land conservation by planting plantations in the potential disturbed area is one way to solve this problem. Grass jelly or locally known as janggelan (Mesona palustris BI.) can be an alternative for this land conservation, Nawangan has suitable geographic location and grass jelly cultivation is profitable for the surroundings economically. Aim of this study was to evaluate land suitability for grass jelly to solve the land degradation problem in Nawangan. Purposive sampling methods were used to determine sample point, then soil sample analyzed in a laboratory, and overlay of type of soil map and land use map. After soil characteristic was obtained, then the matching process was used. Finally, from this study showed that land suitability classes in Nawangan for grass jelly are very suitable on (S1) land unit LaS and LaK, suitable (S2) on land unit Lil, LiH, LiS and LaH, and marginal suitable (S3) on land unit LaL and LiK.
