Abstract

This research aims to analyze intercultural communication between Papua and Java students in the University of Brawijaya (UB) and to find out model of their intercultural communication. The research focuses are: First, intercultural communication between Papua and Java students analyzed based on cultural, sociocultural, as well as psychocultural background stated on Gudykunst and Kim model of intercultural communication (1992); Second, illustrating their model/s of intercultural communication. This study employs a descriptive-qualitative approach using case study method. Key informants consists of 6 Papua students and 8 Java students from various Faculties in UB, Academic year 2010, 2011, and 2012, who are selected based on purposive sampling technique. The source of the data are collected from in-depth interviews, observations, and documentations. The findings of this research indicate that: Firstly, in terms of cultural background, Papua students face  barriers to interact and communicate with Java student because  of language  difference and their strong collectivistic culture. In terms of sociocultural background, perceptions about the limits of social norms and rules violations that can be tolerated by the community in their former environment makes Papuan students insensitive to social norms and rules applied in their new neighborhood. In terms of psychocultural background,  stereotype, ethnocentrism, and prejudice owned by Papua students become barriers to get along and interact with Java students, but for some Java students, those psychocultural aspects raise empathy that motivates them to help their counterparts adapt with campus environment and atmosphere; Secondly, research findings resulting two models of intercultural communication: (1) model of intercultural communication involving Java student as a mediator of adaptation; (2) model of  intercultural communication without mediators involvement.   Keywords: intercultural communication; cultural, sociocultural and psychocultural background; model of intercultural communication.
