Abstract

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) was detected in China in December 2019, spread throughout the world within a few months and was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11th March 2020. It also has hit Indonesia since March 2020. It affects 90.2% of students worldwide, in which 1.57 billion students are absent from school and 191 countries including Indonesia. Unfortunately, the observation found that the students often say impolite language, such as mock their friends, change their friends’ name, and have high intonation when they were uttering their opinion during online teaching and learning process through Zoom. It is very serious problem because impoliteness happened during the main activity. The objective of the study was to find out the realizations of impoliteness strategies used by students in English online learning through Zoom during pandemic Covid-19. The study was descriptive qualitative. The subject of the study was VII grade of SMP Ar-Rahman Percut. The data of the study was impoliteness clauses which are recorded from the students’ interaction. The finding of the study, there were eight realizations of impoliteness strategies found in this study, they are be disinterested, unconcerned, unsympathetic; use inappropriate identity marker; use obscure or secretive language; seek disagreement; use taboo words; call the other name; frighten; and condescend, scorn or ridicule. Then, there were three additional realizations, they are employing insincere; direct speech, clear, unambiguous; and invade the other’s space. Keywords: Impoliteness, Students in English Online Learning, Zoom, Covid-19

Abstract

This study deals with Karonese Language Shift of Young Generation. It employs qualitative research design with a case study. This study aims to describe: the reasons for Karonese shift into Indonesian language. The subjects were 20 young generations of Karonese, 10 young generations of intramarriage family and 10 young generations of intermarriage family. They were chosen from 10 young generations whose parents are Karonese father and mother and 10 young generations whose parents are Karonese father and Non Karonese mother. The ages range of the subjects were between 13-17 years old. The instruments used for this study were questionnaire and interview. The interview was used to obtain the reasons of language shift. The data were analyzed by Miles, Hubberman and Saldana’s data analysis. There are two reasons of Karonese young generations use Indonesian language, the first is status of Indonesian language, there are (20%) of young generations from intramarriage family answer this reason and the rest of (80%) use Indonesian language because of social success. There are (50 %) of Karonese young generations from intermarriage family use Indonesian language because of the status of the language. The rest (50%) of the young generations use Indonesian language because of social success.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to find out the realization of flouting maxim of humor uttered by the characters in the movie The Upside. The research was conducted in descriptive qualitative research design. The script and the subtitle of The Upside movie has become the source of data which represent the flouting maxims of Cooperative Principle by Grice. Then the data were analyzed by read and write technique or attentive observation since the data in the form of utterances. The data also analyzed by choosing the funny utterances only since this research focusing in flouting maxim of humor. The result of this study found the realization of flouting maxim were nine points, that called as overstatement (giving too much information), understatement (giving too little information), metaphor, irony, banter, irrelevant statement, ambiguous statement, tautology and rhetorical question. The most used flouting maxim realized in overstatement, and the lowest rank of flouting maxim were realized in the form of tautology. It was zero data in tautology.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aims of this study to determine the level of kinship. This study used a mixed method, employing 300 Swadesh vocabulary lists that have been modified to fit the Austronesian languages. The source of the data in this study is the informants who are the native speaker of Javanese and Sundanese language who live in Medan Tembung and Medan Timur, to pronounce the Javanese and Sundanese 300 Swadesh Vocabulary list.The Lexicostatistics approach was used to analyze the data. The result of data analysis revealed that there were 137 word pairs or 46% out of 300 swadesh vocabulary list. The kinship level of Javanese and Sundanese Languages is in of Family group.keywords must be written to describe the research scope observed, as well as the main terms undergirding the research

Abstract

The objective of the study was to elaborate the factor cause of ethnic language use by the people in inter and intra ethnic communication in Lawe Tawar. A qualitative descriptive research design was applied. The data of this study were words, phrases consist of inter and intra ethnic communication which is uttered by the people in Lawe Tawar. The subject of this research were Batak Toba ethnic, Karo ethnic, Simalungun ethnic, Pak-Pak ethnic and Nias ethnic at the age 18-50 years old. The instruments used for this study were observation and in-depth interview. The data was analyzed by using interactive models of Miles & Huberman (2014:8) technique. The results of the study show some factors of people used the language choice in inter and intra ethnic communication, they were: (1)Ethnic Background of the Participants, (2)Extent of Intimacy with the Interlocutor, (3)Different Social Status of the Participant,(4) Equal Social Status,(5) Showing Off One’s Ethnic Language Mastery. Meanwhile the factors of people in language choice in intra ethnic such as: (1) Ethnic Background of the participant, (2) Immigration, (3) The Topic Discussed
