Abstract

An understanding of the structure of the soil food web is critical in determining the practices of soil fertility management based on the biological processes in tropical agricultural regions. The objectives of the study were to assess the variation in trophic level biomass and to analyze the dynamics of the energy channels on the increasing age of cocoa plantation. The characteristics of soil food web structure in smallholder cocoa plantation aged 4, 5, 7, 10, and 16 years were analyzed. The results showed that only biomass at the third trophic level increased with plantation age, but not for the biomass at the lower trophic levels. Biomass in all energy channels did not increased as well along with plantation age. We concluded that variation in the soil food web structure was more influenced by biotic factors of macro-arthropods group, such as facilitation, recolonization capabilities and accessibility in the soil habitat of smallholder cocoa plantation. Keyword: biomass, biotic, energy channel, trophic level.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to apply sustainable fertilizing system in organic farming                 by System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method. The research was conducted at Sukarasa village, Tasikmalaya West Java. The experiments were conducted using various levels of compost (0, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and 15 tons/acre) and local microorganism (LMO) with different spraying frequencies (0, 4 and 8 times) over the planting season. The results showed that there were no significant effects of yield from organic farming developed by the variety of system introduced above. This result reveals                     no positive correlation between adding more compost and LMO to the yield. The average yield was 4.29 tons/acre. The availability of organic material taken from household garbage and straw                    is 1216. 82 tons. However the need of this organic material to form compost in Sukarasa village is only 922. 35 tons per planting season.

Abstract

Assessment of conservation community perceptions has been an important aspect of wild species research. Harvesting the eggs of Moluccan megapodes has implications for the preservation of bird populations. This study aims to assess the perceptions of local communities living near bird nesting sites regarding the conservation of the endemic Moluccan megapodes (Eulipoa wallacei). The survey was conducted on 200 respondents from the productive age group (aged 15 to 65) using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique with a closed-ended questionnaire. The Likert scale was used to analyze perception data. Research findings indicated that the majority of the community supported the practice of harvesting eggs, even though they were aware that the birds were protected species. Community perceptions of conservation only focused on adult birds and their habitat rather than conserving bird eggs. Therefore, the perceptions of egg conservation must be considered when developing an effective conservation program. It was recommended to design a conservation program to increase local people’s awareness of the importance of Moluccan megapode conservation through sustainable egg harvesting.
