Abstract

Songwriters utilize figurative language to portray their ideas, sentiments, and emotions in a manner that is more intriguing, attractive, and distinctive. This encourages this research to study a song written by Paul Mauriat entitled "Love is Blue." This song is analyzed to answer some research objectives, namely what figurative languages are frequently used by the writer, how the contextual meaning is built, and what emotions are expressed by the writer. Through the analysis, this present study finds five types of figurative language in this song with different percentages. With 38% of the total, metaphor dominates the use of figurative language. The rest of the figurative language found in this study consists of alliteration (33%), hyperbole (11%), repetition (11%), and personification (7%). Also, there are three basic emotions that are found in every context of the lyrics that indicate the use of figurative language. Those are the emotions of sadness, anger, and happiness. The findings indicate that the use of figurative language can express various types of emotions.

Abstract

This paper aims to present the design and development of a web-based English tense learning application as a creative response to the educational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The application focuses on enhancing the receptive and productive skills needed for English tenses, considering the preferences and needs of the e-generation. The research employs the SDLC Sommerville model for application development. It utilizes a qualitative descriptive research methodology to address various research issues, including content formulation and developing performance-based English tense materials. The article aims to contribute a valuable alternative learning method to facilitate English language learning and creative language projects, particularly those involving tenses and their uses. Abstract

The purpose of the current study is to evaluate public service announcements (PSA’s): how visual and verbal rhetoric modes present an intended message. Differences in modes suggest different effects, and rhetoric promotes the power to persuade and convince others. As the growing interest in social media use, PSAs become a complex example of multimodal communication: combining verbal texts and visual images establish natural language in this world. The study looked at the question, how the combinations of texts and images work. Within this scope, Kress & van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar theory and Halliday’s SFL theory were applied along with SF-MDA suggested by O’Halloran & Lim-Fei. The method of analytic descriptive qualitative allows the study to investigate and explain the issue elaborately. The results of this study show the combinations of all resources potentially motivate interactive participants to do the action after the investment of knowledge. Due to the increased importance of social movement, it is estimated that the findings potentially contribute to represent values intended by both public and private sectors.

Abstract

This study seeks to compare how machine translation (MT) and human translation (HT) convey emotional expressions in Dahl’s Matilda. The study discusses the limitation of neural-network machine translation, such as Google Translate, in fully capturing emotional nuance in literary texts although this technology has contributed significantly to improve translation speed and cross-linguistic accessibility. This study employs a descriptive qualitative with a comparative approach. Character-centered content analysis is applied to examine differences in linguistic accuracy and emotional nuance between MT and HT, translation produced by a professional human translator. The results show that the degree of success between MT and HT varies in preserving interpersonal effect, stylistic nuance, and emotional intensity. The tendency of MT to prioritize lexical and semantic fidelity often weakens expressions with emotional loaded, and reduces the naturalness of dialog. In contrast, HT potentially produces the stylistic dictions with a higher degree of functional equivalence in terms of tenor, mode, and interpersonal function although there may be minor emotional shift, such as the imagery softening, occur. Nevertheless, both MT and HT successfully maintain the ideational meaning and emotional development of Matilda’s characteristics. These findings suggest that the main limitation of MT is in its inability to reproduce the adequate emotional and stylistic dimension of literary texts. MT may serve as a useful translation tool, but human evaluation plays significantly in preserving emotional nuance and communicative depth in literary translation.
