Abstract

Qingming Festival is a great festival and tradition for Chinese to commemorate their ancestors. This activity is considered necessary to do by Chinese nation. Qingming festival reflects xiaoxin (孝心) which means devotion toward the elderly or ancestor and is regarded as an educational culture. This tradition is well preserved until now. This study is objected to compare the Qingming festival held in Bengkalis City, Riau, and one held in Sungailiat, Bangka. By visiting directly those places and interviewing some Chinese people there, we will study and conclude some comparison on this subject.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the influence of acculturation of Chinese Kungfu elements on Pencak Silat Betawi. The study used qualitative method and observation with interview and literature study by looking up Betawi and Pencak Silat on Batavia literature. Research finds out that the origins and influence of acculturation of Chinese Kungfu in Pencak Silat Betawi can be seen from a reciprocal relationship between the Chinese community and Betawi through the exchange of knowledge between Chinese martial arts champion and Betawi champion, or brought directly by Chinese Muslims as Master Ong and Kwee Tang Kiam. In addition, there are elements of acculturation both in naming or some movements adopted from Chinese kungfu as Chinese way in Maen Pukul Sabeni that uses two fingers (index and middle), the use of symbols that are closely related to Chinese culture symbols in the logo of Pencak Silat Sabeni, respect technique with Baoquan Li shape as in Mustika Kwitang, and so on.

Abstract

Since some centuries ago, Indonesia has been one of the destinations for immigrating Chinese. When the Chinese came to Indonesia, they also brought their cultures and customs. Some of them have a cultural-cross marriage with local Indonesian and brought their cultures to be introduced to local Indonesian. When the relationship between Chinese and Indonesian became stronger in some fields such as trade, education and politic, some of Chinese cultures has been adapted by local Indonesian or has been assimilated with local cultures. This adaption process was hindered when the New Order of Soeharto government had banned all Chinese culture, including anything closely related. So, the Chinese-Javanese blend puppet show that also brings Chinese culture couldn’t get any supports and its development faces difficulties. The writer using a qualitative methodology interviewed some of Chinese-Javanese puppet show artist and observation of the puppet show performance to make a comparison between Chinese puppet show and Chinese-Javanese blend puppet show in Indonesia. Chinese-Javanese puppet show or usually can be determined as Indonesian potehi puppet Show has some differences from Chinese puppet show. The differences can be found in the making of puppet, puppet profiles, performance way and stories.

Abstract

The Analects is one of the famous books from China which records Confucius’ teachings. Kungfu Panda and Kungfu Panda 2 are two famous animation films from America. After seeing these movies, there are some similar values that can be found between the movies and The Analects, especially in education field. The writer limited the scope into teaching and learning principles. The writer defined 2 main issues. First is to explain the correlation between Kungfu Panda and Kungfu Panda’s teaching and learning principles with The Analects. Second is to understand those principles and its application in our daily lives.  This research method is library research. The results stated that there are some correlation between Kungfu Panda, Kungfu Panda 2, and The Analects. Analyzing the correlation will help us to understand more about Confucius’ teaching, especially in education field.

Abstract

Translation is an activity that transforms a written or verbal language to other written or verbal language. In its process, a translator should  overcome the difficulty that caused by the cultural differences, habits, vocabularies and grammars which could help the translator  to translate precisely without changing the original meaning of  translation’s source. Through the translation lesson, the writer found some factors that caused the student’s mistake in translating Chinese into Indonesian or Indonesian into Chinese. On the other side, The writer found that the translation’s mistakes are caused by the lack of understanding Chinese and Indonesian‘s history, culture and habit. There are some factors that lead to the lack of understanding of Chinese history, culture and habit such as the inability of student  to understand the meaning of  history, culture and habit that usually are contained on the words, proverb and sentences, the environment that are not supporting students to have a deep understanding of Chinese history, culture and habit. The deeper understanding of Chinese culture, history and habits could help student to translate Chinese that influenced by history, culture and the habit of Chinese precisely. Through the observation, the writer will analyze some factors and analyze how the lecturers could overcome the difficulties of translation that are faced by students.

Abstract

New Shaolin is a famous film from China. The story tells about Houjie?s life and his personality change. Shaolin?s positive influence in Houjie?s life is the main purpose of this research. Research used references and the theory of Sigmund Freud of ID, Ego and Superego to analyze Houjie?s personality change. Result shows thatafter receiving Shaolin?s teaching, he became a better man. In Shaolin, Houjie was forgiven. Shaolin?s teaching such as chanting a scripture can help improve his thoughts. Reflection and Kungfu brought Houjie out of his revenge and bad emotion, also bring harmony to his thoughts and heart. Houjie?s pre-character was dominated by his ID, but after he had entered Shaolin and learned Shaolin?s teaching, Houjie studied how to reach balance in 3 factors mentioned in the theory of personality.
