Abstract

Hyperglycemia exert toxic effect in kidney. The aim of this study was to investigate the short term effect of ethanolic extract of garlic in preventing nephropathy following streptozotocin (STZ) induced rats. Twenty male Sprague dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 group, all group induced induced by single dose intraperitoneal injection of 40 mg kg-1 of streptozotocin (STZ). Treatment with 3 doses ethanolic extract of garlic (0,1; 0,25; 0,5 mg kg-1 day-1) was followed for 14 days, then the left kidneys were excised and histhopathological studies were carried out using scanner 3D Hitech and Panoramic view software. Statistical analysis have been done using non parametric analysis Kruskall Wallis. The study revealed that glomerular diameter of the treatment rats was significantly different from the control group (p=0,0001). Increasing doses didn’t make difference. The ethanolic extract of garlic (Allium sativum) influences the diameter glomeruli but increasing doses has no effect on the glomerular diameter.

Abstract

Lung cancer is a large heterogeneous family of malignancies, with tumors containing more than one subtype are very common. Over 50 different histological variants are recognized within the WHO typing system. Small Cell Lung Cancer comprises approximately 20% of all lung cancers and exhibits a neuroendocrine phenotype while Non Small Cell Lung Carsinoma (NSCLC) lacks these features and makes up the remaining 80% of cases. This case was reported in view of the rarity of this combination of morphologic patterns. The incidence of c- SCLC (Combined- Small Cell Lung Carsinoma) has been reported ranging from less than 1% to 14.6% of all SCLC. Mixed lung cancer in untreated patients suggests a common endodermal origin for c-SCLC which contains small-cell and non-small-cell pulmonary tumors. Quoix et al found that presentation as a solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) is particularly indicative of a c-SCLC. Combined- Small Cell Lung Carsinoma contains a squamous cell and/or adenocarcinoma component. It’s becoming more important for pathologists to correctly subclassify NSCLC’s as distinct tumor entities, or as components of c-SCLC cause it’s more agrresive. A 46-year-old smoker man was referred because of rapid growth of a solitary nodule mass revealed by chest radiography with brain and limfonodes metastases. There was mixed histological feature including adenocarsinoma, squamous cell carsinoma and large cell carsinoma. The patient is dead after a few weeks later. It was revealed a panel immunohistochemistry stain (CK-7, CK-20, TTF-1, P63 and Chromoganin). It was concluded as c- SCLC.

Abstract

Introduction: A periodical database is important including for skin cancer. Periodical registration is needed to acknowledge changes in pattern and frequencies of skin lesion. Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe the pattern and the frequency of skin lesion in RSUD Kariadi.Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted through analysis of the medical records of patients diagnosed skin lesion in the pathology labolatory of RSUD Kariadi between 2008 and 2009. The variables were secondary data including age, gender, specimen area, dan histopathology diagnosis. Data was choosen by consecutive sampling from 381 medical records of skin tissues examined at laboratorium of pathology anatomy of Dr. Kariadi general hospital during 2008-2009.Result: 381 cases were recorded comprising of 246 (65%) neoplastic and 135 (35%) non neoplastic lesion. 120 patients presented with skin cancer, and 126 with benign skin lesion. Most malignancy was observed among female patients (62.5%) on age catagory of 15-39 (65%). The most common lesion was basal cell carcinoma (48.3%) followed by squamous cell carcinoma (33.3%), malignant melanoma (10%), skin appendix carcinoma (2.5%), other malignancies (4.9%).Conclusion: the most common malignancies in Dr. Kariadi general hospital before 2008 was similar to data from 13 laboratory of pathology anatomy in Indonesia, which is squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract

This paper points out the issues of personal history versus mainstream/official history, the changing meaning of photographs, the concept of truth/fact, and personal identity in Ana Menendez’s novel Loving Che. The unnamed main character in this novel tries to construct her identity based on her mother's diary and letters as well as the photographs her mother sent to her. She and her mother, Teresa de La Landre, were separated due to a political dispute in Cuba. Teresa managed to get her father and baby out of Cuba and fled to Miami. When Teresa's father arrived in Miami, only then did he realize that Teresa did not go with them to Miami. She stayed in Cuba to wait for her lover, as he told his granddaughter. The main character wondered if she was Che Guevara's daughter, as implied in Teresa's letters and diary. By using Roland Barthes' Semiotic theory and feminist approach, this paper investigates how a photograph can be given different meanings when it is given a different context or background story. Furthermore, how the image of the revolutionist Che Guevara changes from the image based on the fact we read from mainstream history books into the melancholic and romantic image of the same man in the novel when it was given a more personal approach toward the man in the photograph
