Abstract

Religions have become the main topics in the novels by a prolific Singaporean author, Isa Kamari (born in 1960). His understanding and interpretation of religions have begun to develop with the writing of his first novel Satu Bumi (One Earth) in 1998. His latest novel, Tweet (2016) was influenced by an allegorical and mystical work, Persidangan Burung (Bird Conference) (c.1177). Two main narratives, one in the form of a physical nature between a grandfather and his grandson in a bird garden in Singapore and the other in the form of a spiritual nature concerning spiritual birds, ran parallel and converged at a number of important crossroads. These narratives also offered an understanding and appreciation of spirituality that could change and form life on earth in positive and integrated manners that eventually led to goodness rather than to escape from it.

Abstract

This article describes some of the issues that arose during the author’s experience of translating the Malay Hikayat Seri Rama into English, as a literary rather than a philological text. These include the choice of a source text, the nature of the language used in the translation, and the treatment of the most distinctive features of the text, including its focus on Rawana, its setting in a Muslim narrative frame, and its use of the worldview of a medieval Malay court. Linguistic issues are discussed through reference to the concept of “units of translation”. This practice can also be utilized in an expanded sense to refer to larger textual units such as sentences, paragraphs, chapters, and parts of the whole text. Finally, a few recurring stylistic issues are noted, such as the use of a repetitive vocabulary, the use of kinship terms for non-kin, and a small number of places where there are no adequate English equivalents for particular words. The article concludes by suggesting that the approaches of the philologist and the literary translator are sometimes antagonistic but can be mutually beneficial.

Abstract

Even-Zohar sangat dihormati di kalangan peneliti Kajian Terjemahan untuk sumbangan teoritisnya dalam wilayah kajian "Polysystem Theory". Makalah ini memberikan pengantar ke karya terbaru Even-Zohar dalam wilayah "penelitian budaya" (yang ia bedakan dari Kajian Budaya). Karya tersebut menempatkan pemikirannya dalam kerangka kerja yang diturunkan dari Formalisme Rusia dan, yang lebih baru, Semiotika Rusia. Fokus utama makalahnya dalam Penelitian Budaya (2004/2005) adalah pada budaya sebagai sistem sosio-semiotika, yang memungkinkan adanya refleksi dan aksi. Sebuah istilah penting dalam membahas sistem-sistem adalah "repertoar", yaitu aturan-aturan dan materi-materi yang mengatur pembuatan dan penggunaan objek-objek budaya tertentu. Tulisan Even-Zohar berusaha menempatkan repertoar di dalam kerangka kerja yang lebih luas, dan memungkinkan penemuan serta pemindahan repertoar-repertoar tersebut di antara kelompok-kelompok sosial. Peran para pembuat-ide sangatlah penting dalam pemindahan ini. Tulisan ini menyimpulkan relevansi "penelitian budaya" terhadap Kajian Terjemahan. Ini menunjukan bahwa ide-ide Zohar hanya dapat digunakan secara terbatas, tetapi mampu menyediakan dasar untuk refleksi lebih jauh tentang peran penerjemah dan penerjemahan, khususnya di banyak negara-bangsa baru.

Abstract

Tulisan ini mengemukakan pentingnya pemahaman penerjemah mengenai "kata" dari sebuah karya. Kata "coloniser" dan "colonised" yang muncul dalam karya Albert Memmi memiliki relevansi dengan pengertian kolonial yang bersifat metaforis. Oleh karena itu, seorang penerjemah, dalam melihat kedua kata itu, haruslah terfokus pada teks itu sendiri dan merefleksikannya. Secara singkat ada banyak cara untuk melihat karakteristik yang beragam dari hubungan antara penerjemah beserta terjemahannya dan penulisnya

Abstract

Tulisan ini membahas karya pengarang perempuan Prancis, Kim Lef vre. Lef vre dilahirkan di Vietnam dari ayah Prancis dan ibu Vietnam-ia sendiri kini tinggal di Prancis. Karya-karya autobiografinya berkenaan dengan kompleksitas identitas campurannya. Dalam karya novelnya Marina la Malinche, ia menyajikan kehidupan seorang wanita penerjemah, Malinche, selama invasi Spanyol di Meksiko. Malinche saat ini dianggap oleh orang Meksiko sebagai pengkhianat bangsa. Dalam novel itu Lef vre menggunakan tokoh Malinche sebagai cermin problem identitasnya. Penerjemah hanyalah seorang "pengkhianat" ketika ia menjadi korban kekuatan di luar dirinya.

Abstract

This article deals with the potentials and problems of co-translation, the production of a target text by two people: one who knows the source language and another who does not. It argues that the processes of translation and co-translation are identical once a preliminary initial target text translation (a "crib") has been established. Drawing on debates relating particularly to the translation of North American Indian texts during the 1980s, it calls for faithfulness to the original sourcetext and also for the "duty of disclosure", through which the translators explain to the new readership their aims, methods of working, and how they have dealt with the various problems they have faced in producing the new target text together.
