Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: This paper describes historical phases of Madurese identity construction, the origins of Madurese ethnicity, inter-ethnic and inter-cultural relation, Madurese Pendalungan culture, and how Islam involves into cultural identities of the Madurese. In this paper, I will argue that Islam has become part of cultural values of the Madurese, that is, embedded within traditional activities and local wisdom. However, the involvement does not mean to exclude other “non-Islamic” and “non-Madurese” tradition in the process of construing Madurese identity. By exploring how Madurese identity was culturally constructed we could be able to draw more visible connection between religion, tradition, and social identity. This paper illustrates how Madurese identity culturally produced, nurtured, and matured. Since identity is a way of perceiving, interpreting, and representing the existence of people, I persist that Madurese identity has also been produced and reproduced depending on political, social, and cultural situation. In this regard, inter-religious or inter-ethnic relation remains important.

Abstract

The connection between violence and religious principle from time to time has been an essential topic discussed among Muslim scholars. Many radical movements, such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syiria (ISIS), referred to the Qur’an and hadith for justifying or rationalizing their violent acts. They consumed the verses of the Qur’an in order to graps and spread their mission. They hijacked the scripture in their behalf. This article aims to describe the verses of war in the Qur’an which structurally consists of social and political nuances. This article also discusses what so-called “permissive-structure” or “instruction-structure” and elucidates several verses of war, based on Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-‘Aẓīm written by Imam al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Fidā’ and al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān written by Sayyid Muḥammad Ḥusayn al-Ṭabāṭabā’ī. Using hermeneutical approach and discourse-analysis, this study argues that the verses of war in the Qur’an have been contextually misinterpreted by the radical groups to achieve their political interests.

Abstract

Blaming or demonizing other could appear from misunderstanding paradigm toward knowledgeable entities: individually or collectively. Inclusive approach to know and understand other religious groups is a basic principle to build interreligious relation. In his Dialogue Decalogue, Leonard Swidler suggests that to build interfaith dialogue is to learn and understand (other) realities. In this regard, religious radicalism could be perceived as an outcome of misunderstanding that allows people to exclude or ignore others. This paper aims to explore several books of Muslim scholars, both in classical and contemporary period, relating to comparative study of religion. It is the finding of this work that understanding other religions (or religious others) as articulated in the book will create a level of acceptance within religious believers.

Abstract

Attempts to build inter-religious harmony obtained influential obstacles within social relationship that is regularly based on never-ending ideological discourses. Every religion comes with its own basic faith and claim of truth. Even though, this claim should not normatively exclude the faith of others. In other word, religious believers could not assert their own faith to blame other different faiths. This paper argues that inter-religious harmony, especially between Islam and Christianity, is not only based on doctrinal-ideological argument but also historical evidences. This research will portray the relations between Islam and Christianity in the era of the Prophet Mohammad that could be illustrated in three periods: (1) pre-revelation, (2) the period of Mecca, and (3) the period of Medina. The paper will also explain the Islam-Christian relation model in the era of the Prophet by using historical-critics and hermeneutical-phenomenology.

Abstract

Assimilation is a process of dynamic communication and mutual influence between two cultures, which grow together and adapt to each other. In the Madurese context, social interaction and cultural assimilation between the Chinese community and Madurese society develops in a complex and diverse social space, depending on the historical and sociological context. One example of cultural assimilation in Madura is the attachment of cultural adaptation by Chinese Muslims on the one hand and the attachment of Chinese art and architecture to Madurese cultural works on the other. This study intends to explain the existence of Chinese Muslims in Madura, both from historical and sociological perspective, as well as their struggles amid the flow of Madurese culture which is perceived as Islamic culture. It is hoped that this research topic can contribute to the discourse on social identity, religion and ethnicity. In addition, this qualitative research, that is based on observation and in-depth interviews, is expected to elucidate a piece of social interaction and cultural assimilation among Chinese Muslims in Madura.

Abstract

Plurality creates friction which there are two poles; majority and minority. Relation both do not always go hand in hand, and often reaches the tension which, strangely, is supported by the legitimacy of the Islamic law itself. So, we need jurisprudence that offers contextualization, accommodating, flexible and prioritize the benefit principle. This jurisprudence models get touch of two charismatic of NU, namely KH. Sahal Mahfudh and KH. Ali Yafie. KH. Sahal Mahfudh reconstruction of mazhab’s patterns and make improvements to the existing jurisprudence concept. While KH. Ali Yafie interpreting verses of the Koran directly by incorporating sociological aspects into consideration. KH. Sahal Mahfudh’s approach emphasized maslahah mursalah and Ali Yafie which rests on the analysis of concrete implications kifayah obligatory on the ideal of majority-minority relations in Indonesia. According to both, the relation whatever to uphold human values are summarized in the maqasid al-Shari’ah.
