Abstract

Writing is commonly considered as the most difficult skill to learn. It is due to the skills involved in writing, which are highly complex. A learner has to be aware of higher level skills of planning and organizing as well as the lower one of spelling, word choice, punctuation, and so on. Students also need interaction with others to gain more views or ideas.Peer exchange is a technique which allows a teacher to ask students to read one another’s papers and to write feedback notes. It will be useful to arrange students to help one another to improve their written work. This technique is believed to be able to accommodate the students’ need of interaction and get feedback from others that finally will stimulate them to think more critically to make their own written work. This technique itself works in such a way: (1) teacher asks the students to take the paper they have written and pass it to someone else; (2) students keep the papers face down, until teacher commands them to do so; (3) when the teacher commands them ―Go ahead!‖ students are to look over the papers and to provide some written feedback: things they feel interested about the paper; suggestions for improvement; questions; or any other constructive idea; and (4) teacher reminds the students that the goal is to help the person do much better than he already didPeer exchange is believed to be useful in writing activity for it is able to: (1) get all students look over others’ work so they will know some works done better than theirs; (2) perform active learning highly; (3) provide lot of feedback to students very efficiently than teacher alone could provide. Keywords: teaching writing, peer exchange, feedback

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the effect of computer-mediated communication (CMC) and face-to-face (F2F) communication on the students’ writing. The subjects were the English department students of the fourth semester at the private University in Madiun. The researchers employed the students in class A and B as the research subjects. The research method used was a quasi-experimental design. The research design was divided into pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Both of the two groups were given pre-test to see the homogeneity of the two groups. The experimental group was given CMC, and the comparison group was given F2F communication. Then, both of the two groups were given post-test. The data collection technique was done by giving the students a writing test. Data analysis was done by employing the independent t-test. The result shows that the students’ writing after employing F2F communication is more effective than students’ writing after employing CMC. The students like to share the ideas directly than they employ CMC because it is more complicated. In addition, it is because the students find difficulty in sharing the ideas through CMC, so, F2F communication is better than CMC on the students’ writing quality.

The method being used was qualitative method. The researcher used the data from the movie Enola Holmes 2. Apart from writing the movie script, data is collected through a series of observational steps, including watching the film, downloading the script, identifying and labeling the impoliteness strategy used in the movie, and categorizing each piece of data according to Culpeper (2005). As a result, five types of rudeness strategies are identified that they are bald on record impoliteness (28%), positive impoliteness (14%), negative impoliteness (38%), off-record impoliteness (17%), withhold politeness (3%).  The function of each strategy are using direct statement, disassociating from others, ignoring the others, using inappropriate identity markers, condescending or threatening others and talking back, employing insincere politeness and being silent. The mother of the main character has an education, and she lives in a society that does not value women's rights, which influences her decision to use the impoliteness strategy.
