Abstract

Sentani, Jayapura has various cultural heritages. One of them is folktale with some genres i.e. myths, legends, fables, and fairy tales.   In the past, old Sentani people passed those tales down to teach knowledge, history, entertainment and education for their children and grandchildren. Social values in the tales such as hard work, discipline, persistence, cooperation, love, respect, and helping each other, can be used as media to develop children’s character. Children are prioritized since they are the important pillars who will continue the life of socio-culture in the future.  This article is the result of a community service as  a dissemination of the previous research, PDUPT 2017/2018 that also encouraged the importance of Sentani  folktales as media of children’s charater buiding. The activity is executed in PAUD  “Hadassah”,  District Heram.  Through this activity, it is hoped that pupils and teachers in PAUD Hadassah are enthusiastic to learn Sentani folktales  as one of cultural heritages that need to be preserved and disseminated to young generation, especially Sentani children. Keywords: folktales, Sentani people, character education

Abstract

Character education is now indeed a major issue of education, apart from being part of the process of forming the nation's children's morals, character education is also expected to be the main foundation in the success of Indonesia Gold 2025. Character education can be given early in early childhood through the media of fairy tales. The importance of fairy tales for early childhood is not only an activity to put children to sleep but can also improve the development of the child's right brain, psychology, emotional intelligence, noble character, and increase imagination in early childhood. Telling fairy tales to children is an important part of parenting. Besides being useful for psychological development, it also makes children feel loved and cared for by their parents. So that it does not cause moral degradation amid the rapid development of technology today. Through fairy tales as a medium for character education in early childhood, children will be able to learn about the world, life, themselves, and others. Keywords:  Character education, psychology, emotional intelligence, Jayapura

Abstract

A Slogan says that reading is the world’s window. This expression means that through reading someone is able to see and follow the world’s development, including knowledge. Unfortunately, Indonesian reading habit is still low, especially children’s. This also happens in Yalimo Regency, Papua. As relatively new regency, literacy in the area needs to be improved. This community service initiated various literacy activities to motivate children’s literacy: reading, writing, and numeracy. Contextual approach by adopting environment and socio-cultre is used. This community service was conducted for a month on August 2019 in two districts, namely District Elelim and District Abenaho. The result showed that the contextual approach used in learning process drove the children to be more enthusiastic in learning reading, writing and numeracy. Hopefully, this kind activity will be continued by the stakeholders, literacy tutors, and parents to improve literacy in Yalimo Regency. Keywords: contextual literacy, Elelim, Abenahoi,  Yalimo Regency.
