Abstract

The increasing participation of married women in the workforce has created complex challenges in maintaining career continuity while fulfilling family responsibilities. This study aims to examine the association between work flexibility, work-life balance, and sustainable careers among married women working in Bandung, Indonesia. This study employed a quantitative survey design involving 399 married women working in formal and informal sectors in Bandung. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire adapted from prior studies on flexible work arrangements, work-life balance, and sustainable career development. The data were analyzed using validity and reliability testing, classical assumption testing, common method bias diagnostics, and multiple linear regression with IBM SPSS 27. The findings indicate that work flexibility and work-life balance are positively and significantly associated with sustainable career. Work flexibility has a regression coefficient of 0.505, while work-life balance has a regression coefficient of 0.507. The model produced an R² value of 0.890, indicating a very strong explanatory pattern within the analyzed sample. However, because the data were collected through self-reported questionnaires at one point in time, the findings should be interpreted as statistical associations rather than causal effects. This study is limited to married women working in Bandung and relies on cross-sectional self-report data. Future studies should use longitudinal designs, broader samples, and additional variables such as supervisor support, family support, organizational culture, and career adaptability. Organizations should develop flexible work arrangements, family-friendly policies, fair workload distribution, and inclusive career development programs to support married women’s long-term career sustainability. This study contributes to gender-sensitive human resource management literature by examining how work flexibility and work-life balance are associated with sustainable careers among married women in an urban Indonesian context.
