Abstract

This study attempts to investigate materialism portrayed in The Winner Stands Alone and Crazy Rich Asians. The author uses novels as the object of research, namely the Crazy Rich Asian novel (2013) by Kevin Kwan and the novel The Winner Stands Alone (2008) by Paulo Coelho. In this work, the author used the sociological theory of literature and the theory of social class to analyze the novel. The method used to write this thesis is a qualitative descriptive method. The results and analyzes found in the novel relate to differences in social class and the differences and similarities of materialism in the two novels. This class difference arises from the existence of social class groups in which they classify their social class, namely the upper class, the middle class and the lower class. he does not want to accept the middle or lower class in his group. The difference in social class is measured in terms of power or wealth, privilege and prestige, which affect the position, lifestyle, habits and behavior of the upper, middle and lower classes. This is why the gap between the three classes is so striking. The conflict that arises is a gap in the social status of a group and in life or family relationships.

Abstract

This study entitled "An Analysis Of Prejudice As Portrayed In Tayari Jones's Novel An American Marriage". In this study the writers analyzes the forms of prejudice namely stereotype, social distance, and discrimination. This study aims to reveal that literary works reflect to social reality. The object of this study is a novel entitled "An American Marriage". In this study the writers has three problems to discuss: how is the stereotype as form of prejudice portrayed in Tayari Jones’s novel An American Marriage, how is the social distance as form of prejudice portrayed in Tayari Jones’s novel An American Marriage, and how is the discrimination as form of prejudice protrayed in Tayari Jones’s novel An American Marriage. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. Data is obtained from words, phrases, clauses or sentences that relate to stereotype, social distance and discrimination.

Abstract

Artikel ini dibuat berdasarkan penelitian yang berjudul “Nilai-Nilai Sosial Dan Kearifan Lokal Dalam Andung Mandailing Tapanuli Selatan (Dokumentasi dan Terjemahan Ke Dalam Bahasa Inggris)” yang dilakukan di kota Medan dan di kampung halaman etnis Mandailing yaitu di Sipirok dan Padang Lawas. Dalam penelitian ini yang akan diteliti adalah bahasa Andung Mandailing yang dipakai oleh para gadis yang akan melaksanakan perkawinan. Bahasa Andung penting untuk dideskripsikan dan didokumentasi karena mengandung nilai-nilai sosial yang luhur dan kearifan lokal yang harus terus dilestarikan agar tidak punah digerus zaman. Penelitian kepustakaan memanfaatkan bahan-bahan yang sudah dicetak oleh para penulis lokal dan akademis. Tujuan jangka panjang dari penelitian ini adalah akan mendokumentasi dan mendeskripsikan bahasa Andung dalam bahasa Inggris. Hal ini dilakukan agar generasi muda merasa peduli dan memberikan perhatian pada tradisi dan budayanya. Target yang akan dicapai adalah model atau strategi untuk usaha revitalisasi agar tidak terancam punah. Metode pengumpulan data kualitatif dilakukan dengan wawancara para tokoh Mandailing. Tujuan khusus untuk menghasilkan konsep dan ideologi yang dapat dimanfaatkan generasi muda untuk mengantisipasi pengaruh buruk dari negara asing yang bertentangan dengan prinsip hidup kita.
