Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic raises the likelihood of food insecurity and affects the nutritional status of children. This study aims to examine the relationship between household food poverty and children's dietary diversity. The cross-sectional study has done at Lhokseumawe City and North Aceh District. A sample of 289 children aged 12–59 months participated in this study. The Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) was used to measure household food insecurity. Meanwhile, the Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS) was done to assess children's dietary diversity. The Chi-square was employed to analyze the association between household food insecurity and children's dietary diversity. The prevalence of household food insecurity was 8,3%, consisting of 5,5% moderate food insecurity and 2,8% severe food insecurity. Most children had diverse food consumption (88,6%). However, 11,4% of children had low dietary diversity. Household food insecurity was significantly correlated with children's dietary diversity (p= 0,002). Conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic indirectly impacts household food insecurity, which can worsen the condition of food consumption for toddlers, especially regarding diversity in food consumption. A strategy is required to assist food-insecure households to maintain and increase children's dietary diversity.

Abstract

Stunting is still a serious problem in toddlers and is usually caused by insufficient calcium and phosphorus intake, which plays an important role in bone formation. This study aimed to analyze the phosphorus and calcium intake of stunted toddlers aged 24-59 months in Sinar Bahagia Village, Simeulue Barat District, Simeulue Regency. This research was a case-control study. The sample of this study was stunted and non-stunted children. Each case and control group consisted of 62 subjects who were selected using the simple random sampling technique. Food recall and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) were used to investigate nutrient intake. NutriSurvey was used to analyze the content of nutrient intake. Meanwhile, the chi-square test was used to analyze the effects of calcium and phosphorus intake on the incidence of stunting. Stunted children had lower calcium and phosphorus intakes than non-stunted children (P-value <0.05). Stunted children had 2.879 times lower phosphorus than the control group. Moreover, they had 35 times lower calcium intake than the control group. Serious stunting problems in children require a nutritional counseling program that trains mothers to meet children’s daily food intake, especially high calcium and phosphorus.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected school children who are not homeschooled. Moreover, the pandemic has negatively impacted their food intake, sleeping behavior, and physical activities; these impacts lead to obesity. This study aims to (1) describe the children's intake of energy and nutrients (KH, protein, and fat) that cause obesity during the 2021 Covid-19 pandemic, (2) describe the incidence of obesity in children during the 2021 Covid-19 pandemic, and (3) analyze the relationship between food intake and the incidence of obesity in children during the 2021 Covid-19 pandemic. This study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The researchers investigated the relationship between energy, carbohydrate, fat, and protein intake and obesity in children. This research was conducted at Raudhatul Mubarakah Islamic Boarding School from 31 August to 6 September 2021. This study has discovered that most of the respondents (78%) have insufficient energy intake, 23 samples (46%) have insufficient carbohydrate intake, 39 samples (78%) have insufficient fat intake, and 20 samples (40%) have sufficient protein intake. Moreover, this study has found that 22 samples (44%) are obese while 28 samples (56%) are not obese. Finally, this study has proven a relationship between protein intake and the incidence of obesity (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, energy, carbohydrate, and fat intakes do not show significant relationships with the incidence of obesity (p > 0.05).
