Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus, increased blood glucose or hyperglycemia, is associated with increased oxidative stress and cardiovascular diseases. This condition will further cause carbohydrate and fat metabolism change, resulting in the decreased antioxidant defense system. Black rice, red beans, and moringa leaves contain oleic acid, butyric amino acid, antioxidants, phytic acid, and arginine, which can improve insulin sensitivity, and blood glucose homeostasis. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of betamelor (black rice, red beans, and moringa leaves) on blood glucose in ratsMaterials and Methods: The design of this research was experimental research with pre-and post-control group design. A total of 20 Sprague Dawley female rats were divided into four groups, namely standard feed (PS), 80% feed of betamelor (PB8), 50% feed of betamelor (PB5), and 20% feed of betamelor (PB2). Betamelor intervention was given as much as 5% of weight for 28 days. Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG) levels were measured using the GOD-PAP method. Blood glucose data were analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at a 95% confidence level and using Duncan's test. Results: There were differences in FBG between groups after the intervention of betamelor. The results showed that after 28 days of intervention, betamelor decreased the serum glucose concentration from 122.69 mg / dL to 97.70 mg / dL (20.37%) in the PB8 group and from 123.91 mg / dL to 113.28 mg / dL (8.58%) in the PB5 group, but the standard diet (PS) increased by 5.73%. This result can be applied to reduce blood glucose levels in obese and patients with metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: There was a significant effect of giving a mixture of black rice, red beans, and Moringa leaves on fasting blood sugar in rats.

Abstract

Introduction: The increase in blood sugar or hyperglycemia is a metabolic disorder known as diabetes mellitus and is associated with the rise of oxidative stress and complications in the vascular system. Further, it will cause alteration in carbohydrate and fat metabolism leads to a reduction of the antioxidant defense system. Black rice, red beans and moringa leaves contain oleic acid, butyric amino acid, antioxidants, phytic acid and arginine which can improve insulin sensitivity and blood glucose homeostatis. This study aims to identify the effect of mixture powder (black rice, red beans, and moringa leaves) based feeding against the blood glucose level in rats. Methods: The study was an experimental research with pre and post control group design. A total of 20 Sprague Dawley female rats were divided into four groups, namely standard feed (PS), 80% mixture powder feeding (PB8), 50% mixture powder feeding (PB5) and 20% mixture powder feeding (PB2). The mixture powder intervention was executed about 5% of body weight for 28 days. Fasting blood glucose was measured using the GOD-PAP method. The data obtained was conducted the statistical analysis using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at a 95% confidence level. If it showed a significant effect on the response variable, then Duncan's Multiple Range Test would be conducted. Results: There were significant differences in fasting blood glucose among groups after the mixture powder intervention. The results revealed that after 28 days, mixture powder might lower the serum glucose concentration from 122.69 mg/dL to 97.70 mg/dL (20.37%) in the PB8 group and from 123.91 mg/dL to 113.28 mg/dL (8.58%) in the PB5 group, but vice versa, the blood glucose in the PS group, intervened by standard-based feeding increased by 5.73%. According to these results, mixture powder can be considered to reduce blood glucose in people with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: The intervention of a mixture of black rice, red beans, and Moringa leaves may significantly influence the fasting blood glucose in rats. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic raises the likelihood of food insecurity and affects the nutritional status of children. This study aims to examine the relationship between household food poverty and children's dietary diversity. The cross-sectional study has done at Lhokseumawe City and North Aceh District. A sample of 289 children aged 12–59 months participated in this study. The Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) was used to measure household food insecurity. Meanwhile, the Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS) was done to assess children's dietary diversity. The Chi-square was employed to analyze the association between household food insecurity and children's dietary diversity. The prevalence of household food insecurity was 8,3%, consisting of 5,5% moderate food insecurity and 2,8% severe food insecurity. Most children had diverse food consumption (88,6%). However, 11,4% of children had low dietary diversity. Household food insecurity was significantly correlated with children's dietary diversity (p= 0,002). Conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic indirectly impacts household food insecurity, which can worsen the condition of food consumption for toddlers, especially regarding diversity in food consumption. A strategy is required to assist food-insecure households to maintain and increase children's dietary diversity.

Abstract

One of the social problems solving the direct impact on the community is overcoming household food security due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to analyze household food security during the COVID-19 pandemic and link it to the nutrient intake and nutritional status of children under five in the Kupang district area. This cross-sectional study is based on a survey conducted on the Timorese population in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, from May to October 2021. Data on household dietary diversity was collected through the 24-hour food recall using the household dietary diversity score (HDDS). The study sample was taken from Timorese population families with toddlers under five years, and 1,444 families voluntarily participated in this study. Subjects were taken at each public health using a simple random method. This study analyzes the Spearman correlation test with the HDDS and the proportion of food expenditure. A 63% of households had a balance of less cost (<50%) with an average of 63.9. Generally, households (90.4%) had a pretty good diet diversity score. Food groups that were relatively highly consumed by most households included cereals (100%), sugar and sweeteners (90.2%), oils and fats (93.7%), seasonings, and spices (89.4%). A significant effect with p<0.05 was on HDDS during the COVID-19 pandemic. The food consumption score is another indicator widely used in determining household food security. Therefore, it is necessary to revalidate tests in further studies of these indicators.
