Abstract

The research about molecular weight and functional group analysis of low molecular weight liquid cyclic natural rubber has been done. The aim of this research is to achievement the quality of low molecular weight of liquid cyclic natural rubber. This research has been made in several steps such as preparation of the sample of rubber, the process of molecular degradation of cyclic rubber, and characterization of LCNR by using FTIR, GPC and viscosity test. Degradation is done with the help of the phenylhydrazine reagent with oxygen gas atmosphere with a flow rate of 2 LMin-1 for 24 hours. Molecular weight analysis by GPC had result the LCNR sample had a Mw is 60,556, a Mn is 6,661, and a PDI is 11,08613. The intrinsic viscosity can be used by relating it to the molecular weight by the Mark Houwink – Sakurada (MHS) equation and get the result 63.533 for LCNR molecular weight. The C-H stretching and bending region are two of the most difficult regions to interpret in infrared spectra. The ranges between 3300 to 2750 cm-1 is the C-H stretching region, is the more practical of the two regions. The frequency with which C-H bonds are obstructed is largely determined by the type of hybridization attributed to the bond. The stronger the vibrational force constant, the higher the vibration frequency.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effects of varying bagasse mass, as well as the roles of glycerol as a plasticizer and chitosan as a reinforcing agent, on the physical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of bioplastics. The research was conducted through laboratory experiments using a completely randomized design (CRD). The mass of bagasse was varied at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 g, while the concentrations of glycerol and chitosan were kept constant across all treatments. The results showed that increasing the mass of bagasse tended to produce bioplastics with greater stiffness and brittleness, while also reducing surface homogeneity, as observed through SEM analysis. The addition of glycerol improved material flexibility, as indicated by an increase in elongation from 11.8% to 27.9%. Meanwhile, chitosan contributed to enhanced tensile strength, which increased from 0.4199 MPa to 1.4221 MPa. In addition, higher bagasse content improved thermal resistance, as demonstrated by DSC analysis. The highest biodegradation rate reached 73.95% in a sample with a specific composition during the testing period. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional group interactions among cellulose, glycerol, and chitosan within the bioplastic matrix. These findings indicate that the combination of bagasse with glycerol and chitosan can produce bioplastics with a balanced combination of flexibility, mechanical strength, and biodegradability. This study contributes to the utilization of agricultural waste as a value-added raw material for bioplastic production and supports the development of sustainable, environmentally friendly materials.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop cellulose nanowhiskers from oil palm empty fruit bunches (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) as an environmentally friendly reinforcing material for biopolymer composites and to evaluate their characteristics using FTIR, TEM, XRD, and DSC analyses. This development was intended to produce composite materials with improved mechanical properties and thermal stability, thereby offering potential applications in eco-friendly products such as biodegradable packaging, lightweight automotive materials, and biopolymer-based construction materials. The fabrication process involved several sequential stages, including alkaline pretreatment using NaOH, bleaching with NaOCl, cellulose isolation, acid hydrolysis using H₂SO₄, and subsequent mechanical refinement using a ball mill. The yield calculation showed a value of 3.33% based on the initial raw material weight. TEM observations indicated that the cellulose nanowhiskers exhibited a varied particle size distribution, with particles in the range of 50–100 nm tending to be more uniform than larger particles. XRD analysis revealed a crystallinity index of 54.50% and a characteristic cellulose I pattern, indicating that most of the structure was present in crystalline form. DSC analysis further demonstrated that the cellulose nanowhiskers possessed good thermal stability. Based on these findings, cellulose nanowhiskers derived from oil palm empty fruit bunches show considerable potential as environmentally friendly reinforcing agents for biopolymer composites.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the characteristics of bioplastics derived from kepok banana peel starch (Musa paradisiaca L.) and to evaluate the quality of the bioplastics through tensile strength, elongation, and biodegradation tests. The research employed a laboratory-based experimental method starting with the extraction of starch from kepok banana peels followed by the production of bioplastics. Subsequently, physical and mechanical characterization tests were conducted, including tensile strength, elongation, and biodegradation analyses. The results indicated that the produced bioplastics exhibited a dark brown color, were odorless, and had a rough texture on the lower surface and a smooth texture on the upper surface. The mechanical testing showed that the highest tensile strength value obtained was 0.4117 MPa, while the highest elongation value reached 45.5%. Furthermore, the biodegradation test conducted over 21 days demonstrated a degradation rate of 93.99%. In conclusion, kepok banana peel starch with the addition of chitosan and glycerol shows significant potential as an environmentally friendly alternative material for the production of biodegradable bioplastics. Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to insulin deficiency or insulin resistance. Prolonged hyperglycemia can trigger oxidative stress and liver damage characterized by increased levels of SGOT and SGPT enzymes. This study aims to determine the effect of henna leaf extract (Impatiens balsamina L.) on SGOT and SGPT in alloxan-induced Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus L.). The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with six treatment groups and four replications, namely KN (normal control), K- (alloxan 150 mg/kg BW), K+ (alloxan + glibenclamide), P1 (alloxan + extract 450 mg/kg BW), P2 (alloxan + extract 500 mg/kg BW), and P3 (alloxan + extract 550 mg/kg BW). Data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA and Duncan's test. The results of the study showed that henna leaf extract had an effect on liver SGPT and SGOT levels in male white rats induced by alloxan. Henna leaf extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg body weight was proven to be effective in reducing SGPT and SGOT levels in rats induced by alloxan at 150 mg/kg body weight.

Abstract

Indonesia is the second-largest producer of plastic waste in the world, while conventional plastics require a long time to decompose and may generate harmful emissions. Therefore, the development of biodegradable bioplastics has become increasingly important. Abundant cassava peels have potential as a starch source, with glycerol serving as a plasticizer and chitosan as a reinforcing agent. This study aimed to analyze the effect of varying glycerol concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 mL) on the functional group characteristics and thermal properties of cassava peel starch–chitosan-based bioplastics. The bioplastics were synthesized by blending starch and chitosan at an 8:2 ratio, followed by the addition of glycerol at different concentrations. Characterization was conducted using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). FTIR results indicated no formation of new functional groups; however, shifts and broadening of the –OH absorption bands were observed, suggesting physical interactions through hydrogen bonding among starch, chitosan, and glycerol. DSC analysis revealed that glycerol concentration significantly affected the thermal properties of the bioplastics, with the highest melting temperature (Tm) obtained at 6 mL glycerol (160.67 °C) and the lowest at 8 mL glycerol (129.33 °C). The formulation containing 8 mL glycerol exhibited the highest fusion enthalpy (321.73 J/g). These findings indicate that the addition of 6 mL glycerol provides the most optimal plasticization condition with the highest thermal stability, whereas higher glycerol concentrations result in over-plasticization. The optimal formulation shows potential for further development as an environmentally friendly packaging material.
