Abstract

 Improving soil and plant productivity in semiarid regions was challenged by the climatic factors such low  rain fall and high temperature in addition to limited availability of appropriate  agricultural technologies. The objective of this field trial was to assess the effect of biochar and compost tea on the growth of curly leave lettuce grown in a semiarid region of West Timor. Two types of biochars (rice husk and sawdust) in combination with two types of compost teas namely Chromolaena odorata stem and guano at two rates (150 ml/plant and 250 ml/plant) were arranged in a factorial randomized completely block design 3 x 3 x 3  with 4 replicates. Soil parameters such as pH and electrical conductivity, and plant parameters such number of leaves, fresh weight were measured to indicate the treatment effects. The results indicated that soil temperature and soil bulk density were decreased,  and soil moisture, soil electrical conductivity, number of leaves, total fresh weight, and root length were increased by added biochars and compost teas. Application of rice husk biochar at 10 t/ha in combination with guano compost tea at 250 ml/plant in increase the lettuce shoot fresh weight almost twice compared to the control. This results could be attributed to the improving soil productivity by added biochars and nutrients supply by the teas.

Abstract

Mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) productivity in dryland decreased recently due to the soil fertility degradation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of biochar types and cattle manure rates on the growth of mungbean in semi-arid dark soil. The factorial completely randomized block design 3 x 5 with four replicates was set to arrange treatments for the field trial. Two biochars (rice husk and sawdust) at 10 t/ha in combination with four rates of cattle manure (1, 3, 5 and 10 t/ha) and control (without biochar and cattle manure) were applied to the soil, incubated for three weeks and then planted with mungbean cv. Fore Belu. The results revealed that additions of biochar and cattle manure increased soil moisture and soil electrical conductivity by 2-4% and 0.15-0.20, respectively; decreased soil temperature and bulk density by 1-2oC and 0.2 g/cm3, respectively; increased plant height, stem diameter, root length, total, shoot and root dry weights by 4 cm, 0.1 cm, 5 cm, 7 g, 0.9 g and 6 g, respectively, compared to the control. The best growth of mungbean was obtained from the additions of sawdust biochar at 10 t/ha and cattle manure at 3 t/ha.

Abstract

Produktivitas kacang tanah di tanah Entisol (lithic subgroup) semiarid di wilayah Timor Barat sangat rendah karena solum tanahnya sangat tipis, kandungan bahan organik sangat rendah, retensi air dan haranya pun rendah. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memperbaiki produktivitas kacang tanah di tanah Entisol melalui aplikasi biochar. Tiga jenis biochar yakni sekam padi, kayu putih dan jerami kirinyu yang diproduksi pada suhu 290-320oC diberikan pada tanah Entisol dengan takaran 0, 5 dan 10 t/ha, diinkubasikan selama 30 hari dan ditanami dengan kacang tanah varietas lokal. Setiap petak percobaan, kecuali kontrol, diberikan 5 t/ha pupuk kandang sebagai sumber unsur hara. Semua kombinasi perlakukan disusun dalam sebuah rancangan acak kelompok faktorial 3 x 3 dan diulang melalui 4 blok. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil kacang tanah ( berat kering polong) meningkat 50-100% dibandingkan dengan kontrol melalui pemberian biochar 5-10 t/ha. Pemberian biochar juga meningkatkan total polong dan jumlah polong berbiji 2 dan 3, tinggi tanaman, diameter batang, luas daun, jumlah bintil akar, dan berat kering tanaman. Efek jenis biochar terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil kacang tanah secara berurutan adalah sekam padi > kirinyu > kayu putih, sedangkan dari aspek takaran, secara umum 10 t/ha lebih tinggi dari pada 5 t/ha. Perbaikan produktivitas kacang tanah oleh pemberian biochar tersebut kemungkinan disebabkan oleh efek langsung pada tanaman atau perbaikan produktivitas tanah Entisol. Secara umum, pemberian biochar sekam padi, kirinyu dan kayu putih pada tanah Entisol semiarid dapat memperbaiki produktivitas tanah dan karenanya meningkatkan hasil kacang tanah.

Abstract

Teh kompos akhir-akhir ini menarik perhatian para peneliti dan praktisi pertanian organik karena berfungsi ganda sebagai sumber unsur hara dan sekaligus sebagai biopestisida terutama bagi pengembangan pertanian organik karena terbatasnya pilihan dalam pengendalian penyakit. Riset tentang teh kompos sebagai biopestisida berkembang sangat pesat, sementara hasil riset mengenai fungsi teh kompos sebagai sumber unsur hara masih terbatas, sehingga review ini lebih diarahkan kepada fungsi yang terakhir. Secara lebih spesifik, tujuan review ini adalah untuk mengkaji esensi teh kompos sebagai sumber hara, diawali dari kualitas kompos sebagai bahan baku, tujuan pengadukan (brewing) di dalam proses pembuatan, dilanjutkan dengan metode aplikasi, efektivitas teh kompos sebagai sumber hara dan diakhiri dengan pemikiran riset ke depan. Kualitas kompos ditentukan terutama oleh kematangan dan stabilitas kompos. Kualitas dan efektivitas teh kompos sebagai sumber unsur hara sangat tergantung terutama kepada kualitas kompos, pengadukan, metode aplikasi dan faktor abiotik.
