Abstract

This research entitled: The Essence of Terrorism: We Are Different was written with the aim of showing that a strong belief in an ideology or a religion can lead to the concepts of the self (we) and the other (they). Thought about this concept gave an issue to a sense of difference and animosity towards other parties. This party must be destroyed because "we are different" and the other party is a threat. The research method used is Content Analysis and Hermeneutics Technique. The findings and discussion of this research are the reluctance of certain groups to accept differences related to any ideology and religious beliefs. In addition, there are also stages of attitude: fanatical, exclusive, extreme, radical, and terrorist, which are marked by various attitudes of destruction and annihilation. The conclusion of this research is the view of certain groups who assume that everything they do is the truth. Death is a defense and is a coveted gift.

Abstract

This study aims to show how Hawthorne uses characterization techniques and figurative languages such as metaphor and simile to describe the mental state of Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne's characters. This study uses a qualitative method with a psychological approach. The theory used in this research is the theory of life instinct and death instinct by Sigmund Freud. This study analyzes the style of language and characterizations to reveal the characters' mental conditions and inner conflict. The results of this study show that Hawthorne uses characterization techniques and figurative language to tell the conflict between the life and death instinct in Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne. Arthur Dimmesdale represents human weakness and hypocrisy that results in feelings of regret, inner conflict, and suffering that lead to the instinct of death. At the same time, the character Hester is described as having a strong and patient nature that leads to the instinct of life. This study concludes that Hawthorne uses characterization techniques and figurative language such as metaphor and simile to show the characters, Dimmesdale and Hester. They experience inner conflicts and life and death instincts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the novel “Tortuga” expresses the idea that poverty and suffering experienced by Tortuga and his friends make them loss faith to God.  Hermeneutics and content analysis are the research methods employed in this study. The process of examining the author's ideas through the remarks, queries, and exchanges between characters is known as content analysis. This approach aims to reveal, comprehend, and assimilate the meaning contained in literary works. The techniques of Hermeneutics, a philosophy of interpretation, are the method of interpretation employed in this study. The most effective method for interpreting literary and philosophical materials is hermeneutics. The study design entails the interpretation of deeply understood figurative language, or imagery. This allows the researcher to fully grasp the meaning found in literature since they possess comprehensive knowledge of the culture, religion, and history in addition to language and literature. The outcome of the study is the collection of phrases and sentences that contain the characters’ experience relating to sufferings and their viewpoint of God.  The discussion of the research is the study of characters’ reasoning and questions of God’s existence. The novelty of this research is that the usage of both content analysis and hermeneutics. For hermeneutics itself, the research covers several points including history.
