Abstract

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the novel “Tortuga” expresses the idea that poverty and suffering experienced by Tortuga and his friends make them loss faith to God.  Hermeneutics and content analysis are the research methods employed in this study. The process of examining the author's ideas through the remarks, queries, and exchanges between characters is known as content analysis. This approach aims to reveal, comprehend, and assimilate the meaning contained in literary works. The techniques of Hermeneutics, a philosophy of interpretation, are the method of interpretation employed in this study. The most effective method for interpreting literary and philosophical materials is hermeneutics. The study design entails the interpretation of deeply understood figurative language, or imagery. This allows the researcher to fully grasp the meaning found in literature since they possess comprehensive knowledge of the culture, religion, and history in addition to language and literature. The outcome of the study is the collection of phrases and sentences that contain the characters’ experience relating to sufferings and their viewpoint of God.  The discussion of the research is the study of characters’ reasoning and questions of God’s existence. The novelty of this research is that the usage of both content analysis and hermeneutics. For hermeneutics itself, the research covers several points including history.

Abstract

This study focuses on analysing the types of grammatical mistakes found in movie script of Bad Boys for Life (2020). The main data were obtained from the script of the movie and were analysed based on the conceptual framework of grammatical mistake theory. This research is using Descriptive Qualitative Method to analyze the grammatical mistakes of some sentences from the Bad Boys for Life movie script. The data (primary) of this research are all sentences in the Bad Boys for Life movie script. Not all sentences in the script are analysed but only the ones uttered by the main characters, namely Mike and Marcus. We do certain actions in order to gather the data. These include: (1) reading the screenplay, (2) spotting grammatical errors in the script, (3) compiling the sentences that contain grammatical errors, and 4) analyzing the errors, particularly in the area of grammar, by consulting any article sources. The grammatical mistakes found are categorized into 4 types. They are: 1) Missing the auxiliary verb, 2) Problems with the subject and verb agreement, 3) Problems with the pattern of question or interrogative sentence, and 4) Other kinds of error. The analysis of the error is done descriptively by citing related references. Totally, there are 69 errors but only 19 are discussed here.

Abstract

The increasing demand for graduates who are able to communicate effectively in English across different professional domains highlights the need for continuous curriculum evaluation and learning material development. This research is related to the learning outcomes of graduates that have been determined in the English Diploma 3 Program curriculum, especially in the special skills points regarding to oral communication skills in the office, tourism and mass media sectors. In the researcher's understanding, the learning outcomes of graduates must be achieved through various efforts; one of which is the preparation of appropriate learning materials for courses related to communication, one of which is Public Speaking. To be able to compile the learning material in question, complete and precise research has been carried out. Based on this, the appropriate research to be carried out is development research because this research puts ideas into practice as an effort to increase knowledge regarding, for example, curriculum and teaching and learning; then the idea was developed to become a standard model. The results obtained from this research are an increase in what happens in the classroom and understanding of the basis of educational practices implemented. This research also presents ideas about learning materials for Public Speaking courses for students in the English Diploma 3 study program. The expected research results are a more complete set of learning plans and textbooks or modules according to the subjects that are the material of this research.
