Abstract

This research was intended to observe, evaluate, and discover the quality of the speaking materials which appear in Think Globally Act Locally textbook for ninth grade of junior high school published by the Ministry of Education and Culture 2018 revised edition. Researchers evaluated the speaking materials by using the Scott’s theory of good speaking materials. It was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The research object was Think Globally Act Locally textbook, specifically the whole speaking materials on that book. The instruments consisted of evaluation table, documentation, and interview. The data were collected through six necessary steps, included (1) read the textbook thoroughly, (2) find out all the speaking materials, (3) observe all the speaking materials that was found, (4) identify the speaking materials regarding to the four criteria, (5) report the data through evaluation table, and (6) present the data in detail. The result of this study showed that there were 40 speaking materials found in the textbook, 30 of them filled the category of “good”, and 10 others reached the category of “sufficient”. In conclusion, overall the speaking materials in this textbook were classified as good. Therefore, researchers recommend this textbook to be implemented as the main source for speaking activities in classroom interaction.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out “how the student’s English vocabulary and grammar proficiencies were” . The population was all students of SMP N 17 Bengkulu City. The samples were approximately 57 students, with detail were 4 classes of 7th grade. The design of the research was descriptive quantitative. The instrument was English grammar and vocabulary test to measure students’ skill. The results of the research showed that the total average score from grade 7th, their total average score was 33, their average vocabulary score was 20 and then their average grammar score was 44. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the 7th grade students’ vocabulary and grammar skills of SMPN 17 Bengkulu City were still low, also the difference between their average grammar and vocabularyscores of grade 7 was very far, but both’s scores were still under the minimum score (75). This phenomenon could have been prevented if junior high school students had received English background knowledge when they were still in elementary school.This phenomenon is what the researchers are trying to show that this is the effect of not getting background knowledge of English when they were in elementary school. Of course this will cause problems for these students in the future, because the level of difficulty in terms of English study they will encounter in the future will be more difficult.

Abstract

Penggunaan media pembelajaran berbasis digital sangat penting di abad ke 21 ini. Salah satu aplikasi digital untuk membuat media pembelajaran adalah aplikasi Canva. Pengabdian berbentuk pelatihan pembuatan media pembelajaran interaktif dengan aplikasi Canva ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan guru dalam membuat media pembelajaran yang interaktif.  Pengabdian ini melibatkan 22 orang guru SD Negeri 68 Kota Bengkulu. Pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode Model Techical Assistance dalam bentuk kegiatan pelatihan dan juga pendampingan. Kegiatan pelatihan dilaksanakan dengan memaparkan materi tentang ap aitu Canva, kelebihan Canva, fitur utama Canva, cara mengakses Canva, tips desain yang baik, tips membuat power point presentation, tips membuat video pembelajaran yang menarik, contoh struktur video pembelajaran di Canva, langkah-langkah membuat video pembelajaran di Canva, tips membuat poster, serta cara menyimpan dan membagikan hasilnya. Sementara itu, kegiatan pendampingan dilakukan setelah pemaparan materi dengan mendampingi guru-guru dalam mempraktekkan bagaimana cara membuat akun Canva, membuat desain power point, video pembelajaran, dan poster. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini yaitu para guru di SD N 68 Kota Bengkulu telah mampu membuat media pembelajaran interaktif dalam bentuk power point presentation dan juga video pembelajaran menyesuaikan dengan konten materi kelas yang diajarkan.

Abstract

This research aimed at determining the  the distribution and the highest frequency of the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) based on the revised edition of Blooms Taxonomy in the exercises of English textbook entitled Buku Bahasa Inggris “Think Globally Act Locally” SMP/MTS Kelas IX (Kurikulum 2013) for 9th grade students that use at SMPN 24 Kota Bengkulu. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used 106 exercises of the English textbook as the data sources and the checklist table for collecting and used the Miles and Huberman’s theory for analyzing the data to find the result of the study. The result showed that the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) gained differently among skills of HOT and the English Textbook has no gradation or uneven, the author did not emphasize the distribution HOTS according to the students' level of thinking in each exercise in each chapter of the English book Furthermore the highest frequency of HOTS in this study belongs to the C6 (Creating). Therefore, it is suggested that teacher should choose the exercises in English Textbook that appropriate for the students’ need and level. For the author of English Textbook, need to pay attention to the gradation of distribution for each cognitive level in order to produce English textbooks that are appropriate to the level of education and thinking level of students.
