Abstract

Occupational fatigue is a significant issue in occupational safety and health (OHS) that can reduce work capacity, alertness, and increase the risk of workplace accidents. Fishermen are a high-risk group of workers due to their work in harsh environmental conditions, long working hours, and exposure to weather and noise. This study aims to determine the characteristics of occupational fatigue among fishermen in Sorong City, Southwest Papua. The study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive design. The study population was all 13,000 fishermen in Sorong City, with a sample of 100 respondents determined using the Slovin formula and purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted univariately through frequency distribution and percentage. The results showed that the majority of respondents experienced severe occupational fatigue, namely 72.0%, while 28.0% experienced mild fatigue. The majority of respondents were aged 35–44 years (27.0%), had elementary school education (51.0%), and had 11–15 years of service (41.0%). High levels of work fatigue among fishermen are thought to be influenced by heavy physical workloads, long work durations, marine working conditions, noise, and poor ergonomics. This study indicates that work fatigue remains a dominant problem among fishermen in Sorong City, necessitating attention to the implementation of occupational health and safety (K3) to improve the health, safety, and productivity of fishermen.
