Abstract

This article investigates the religious and spiritual dimensions of the kris which is a cherised cultural heirloom. This research aims to portray the deepest meaning of the kris according to the kris enthusiasts in East Java. It is essential to see the kris from local knowledge perspectives. In exploring the meaning of the kris as a sacred object, the article puts forth two main questions: how the kris enthusiasts view the kris as a cultural symbol and how religious and spiritual experiences of the kris influence their views on daily life. This research uses a qualitative method with a combination of phenomenology and ethnography approaches. Data collection was through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, with informants selected using purposive sampling. The results of the research show that firstly, the kris enthusiasts view the kris as a religious symbol that helps build their journey of life. The kris is understood as a symbol of noble values and to contain a philosophy of life that is inseparable from other elements, including beliefs, moral values, art, thoughts and practices, thereby being of great importance for the lives of the kris enthusiasts. Secondly, the religious and spiritual experiences of the kris are not limited to external or ritualistic aspects alone, but also encompass the internal dimension that gives birth to spiritual and religious depth, creating a space of meaning for profound human experience.

Abstract

The keris serves as a profound symbol of identity and spirituality in the Indonesian archipelago. Beyond its function as a weapon, the keris carries high historical value and symbolic meaning, acting as a medium of cultural communication that expresses social status, spiritual beliefs, and moral legitimacy among the Javanese elite. Its existence sparks debate between ascetic perspectives, which reject its mystical elements, and cultural viewpoints, which regard ownership as a means of preserving Javanese tradition and spirituality. This research employs a qualitative ethnographic approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, documentation, coding, thematization, and narrative analysis. The study uses Max Weber’s theory of social action as the interpretive framework to understand the symbolic role of the keris in elite Javanese society. The findings show that the Keris functions as a medium of symbolic communication linking rational, emotional, and traditional aspects within the social dynamics of the Javanese elite. Instrumental-rational action is reflected in the awareness of possessing and maintaining the keris as a strategy to reinforce social authority. Value-oriented action reflects moral and spiritual responsibility in the ritual care of the keris. Affective action manifests in emotional attachment and pride in the keris as a personal symbol. Finally, traditional action persists through inherited customs that sustain the continuity of keris culture.

Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) is increasingly recognized as a key enabler of future healthcare innovation, particularly in advancing medical education, clinical training, and surgical procedures. This study presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of AR integration in the medical domain, analysing 62 peer-reviewed articles from the Scopus database. The review explores five aspects: interaction devices, AR functions, AR impacts, solution validation methods, and medical implementation stages. Results reveal that appearance is the most dominant AR function (41%), followed by procedural guidance in both training and real clinical settings (24% each). Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) are the most widely used interaction device (67%), offering immersive and real-time visual support. AR integration is most prevalent during the intra-operative phase (44%). Reported AR impacts commonly span multiple dimensions, including enhanced accuracy, effectiveness, efficiency, error, and educational outcomes (37%). Validation methods are primarily based on statistical analysis (40%). This review underscores AR’s growing role in transforming healthcare delivery, medical education, and highlights opportunities for future development in multifunctional AR systems, cost-benefit analyses, and expansion into additional medical subspecialties.
