Abstract

The expectations for marital satisfaction among couples are at an all-time high, amidst the declining marriage rates in Indonesia and the dominance of the digital discourse 'marriage is scary'. This study examines whether marital self-disclosure acts as a crucial mediating mechanism in interpersonal communication, which in turn increasing marital satisfaction. A quantitative, non-experimental, and cross-sectional design was applied to a sample of 225 married individuals in Indonesia, analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that interpersonal communication has a strong direct positive impact on marital satisfaction and marital self-disclosure. However, the structural path analysis indicates that marital self-disclosure does not significantly mediate this relationship. This non-significant effect contributes theoretically to the understanding that marital self-disclosure does not always determine marital satisfaction. Instead, these findings highlight that a couple’s interpersonal communication have a noticeable effect on marital satisfaction, without necessarily depending on self-disclosure as a stage that every couple must endure in a marriage. Besides, it is crucial to consider the appropriateness of marital self-disclosure.
