Abstract

When the first technology of photography came to the Netherlands-Indies in the nineteenth century, it was only used for government purposes and was not yet meant for public consumption. On the other hand, the rise of colonial tourism in the Netherlands-Indies in the early twentieth century required a medium for promotion. Photographs were the right choice because, as the saying goes, pictures could tell more than words. Photographs for colonial tourism promotions were produced in various forms such as postcards, illustrations in magazines and guide books, and were published by the colonial government as well as by private publishers. This article discusses the role of photography in colonial tourism in the Netherlands-Indies and its influence in the process to 'find Indonesia'. The sources used are taken from published postcard collections, magazines, guide books, and also published government archives.

Abstract

This article presents the postcolonial analysis of the travel account and guidebook of Marius Buys (1837-1906), a Dutch clergyman. He not only devoted himself as a priest but also travelled in several parts of the Dutch East Indies, such as Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi in the years 1878-1885. After returning to the Netherlands due to illness in 1885, he returned to the Indies in 1886 and was assigned to Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Java. In May 1887 he posted in Bandung West Java (the Preanger regencies), where he remained until his return to the Netherlands in 1890. As a result of his serving in the Preanger regencies (1878-1890), Marius Buys published Batavia, Buitenzorg en de Preanger. Gids voor Bezoekers en Toeristen (1891), the travel guidebook for travellers and tourists. His experiences in Preanger were also recorded in his travel account In het hart der Preanger (1900). The clergyman’s perspective as a tourist and traveller for the indigenous peoples and colony in his travel text and guide book are analysed by using the concepts of Esme Cleall (2012) about European missionaries thinking in British empire in Asia and Africa in the nineteenth century.

Abstract

In the 19th and early 20th centuries tigers were considered a pest or plague (tijgerplaag) in the Dutch East Indies. One of the areas with the highest tiger population was Sumatras's Westkust (West Coast of Sumatra). This research analyzes the colonial government's efforts in dealing with tijgerplaag on the West Coast of Sumatra. This qualitative research is an environmental history research using the historical method. The results showed that the colonial government's policy to exterminate tijgerplaag on the West Coast of Sumatra was ineffective, so that the population of Sumatran tigers was still greater than Balinese and Javanese tigers at the end of the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia. In addition, the Minangkabau people had beliefs about tigers that conflicted with the colonial government's desire to exterminate the tijgerplaag. In this case, the colonial government did not make efforts to conserve the Sumatran tiger, so this animal continues to be hunted.

Abstract

This study examines the use of straattaal vocabulary in the television series De Tatta’s (2024), along with language attitudes and linguistic accommodation among youth in the Randstad region of the Netherlands. Straattaal is a form of street language that has developed within the Netherlands’ multicultural urban environments and is primarily used by young people as a means of social expression and identity. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, combining dialogue analysis from the first episode of De Tatta’s with data collected through questionnaires distributed to respondents residing in the Netherlands. The analysis is based on Leech’s (1981) theory of language functions, Niceforo’s (in Partridge, 1933) framework on the use of slang, Lambert’s (1967) theory of language attitudes, and Giles’ (1987) communication accommodation theory. The findings indicate that straattaal functions as an expressive, informative, directive, and phatic tool of communication. Most respondents demonstrate a high level of understanding of straattaal vocabulary and tend to adopt a convergent attitude in their interactions. However, the use of straattaal by the character Daan is generally perceived negatively by the respondents.
