Abstrak. Pepaya adalah jenis tanaman yang banyak terdapat di daerah tropis. Penanganan pada benih pepaya perlu dilakukan karena masa simpannya relatif singkat. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh sarcotesta dan kondisi simpan terhadap viabilitas benih pepaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) faktorial dengan pola 2 x 3. Faktor pertama yaitu sarcotesta yang terdiri atas 2 taraf : V1 (bersarcotesta) dan V2 (tanpa sarcotesta), faktor kedua yaitu kondisi simpan yang terdiri atas 3 taraf : L1 (28 °C), L2 (10 °C), dan L3 (0 °C), sehingga didapatkan 6 kombinasi perlakuan dengan 3 kali ulangan, dan diperoleh 18 satuan percobaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sarcotesta dan kondisi simpan berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap parameter viabilitas dan vigor benih. Perlakuan terbaik yaitu pada benih tanpa sarcotesta yang disimpan pada suhu 10 °C yang mampu mempertahankan viabilitas benih pepaya sampai akhir penyimpanan.Effect of Sarcotesta and Storage Contitions on Papaya Seed Viability (Carica papaya L.)Abstract. Papaya is a type of plant that is widely found in the tropics. Handling of papaya seeds needs to be done because the shelf life is relatively short. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sarcotesta and storage conditions on the viability of papaya seeds. This study used a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a 2 x 3 pattern. The first factor is sarcotesta which consists of 2 levels: V1 (with sarcotesta) and V2 (without sarcotesta), the second factor is storage conditions consisting of 3 levels: L1 ( 28 °C), L2 (10 °C), and L3 (0 °C), so that 6 treatment combinations were obtained with 3 replications, and 18 experimental units were obtained. The results showed that sarcotesta and storage conditions had a very significant effect on the viability and vigor parameters of the seeds. The best treatment was on seeds without sarcotesta stored at 10 °C which were able to maintain the viability of papaya seeds until the end of storage.
