Abstract

Speaking is the ability to communicate in everyday life. Being fluent in speaking a specific language becomes a goal in learning the language. In speaking, self-confidence generally appears to be one of the vital variants that may promote either failure or success in language learning. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between student confidence and speaking ability. This research method was quantitative, and correlation was the design of this study. The research sample was the fourth semester students of Indo Global Mandiri University, which consisted of 37 students. Purposive sampling technique was applied to select the sample and used two types of instruments to collect data from two variables. The data were obtained through giving questionnaires and speaking test to student. In analyzing the data, the researcher correlated the results of the questionnaire and the speaking test results using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result of the r count after the data was calculated is 0.694. This value showed that self-confidence and speaking ability have a positive correlation. It was shown by Pearson correlation that the result of the r count is between 0.40 and 0.70. Thus, the students’ self-confidence and speaking ability had significant correlation between the two variables. It suggested that the students needed to maintain their confidence while also improving their speaking ability so that they could speak with fluency and accuracy.

Abstract

Grammar is one of the aspects that are important in any skill of English including writing. The collaboration of grammar and writing is believed to affect the context and content to be attractive and easy to read by everyone. In this research, the researcher used the correlation method in quantitative. In collecting the data, the researcher used a grammar mastery exam with multiple choice questions and a writing ability exam with essay writing questions. As the result, this research represented that there was no significant correlation between students’ grammar mastery and writing ability. The results revealed that r-xy was less than r-table, or that 0,122 was less than 0,361. It was considered that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was rejected and the null hypothesis (Ho) was accepted. In the suggestion, students' mastery of grammar was relatively low and requires more practice to achieve good results.

Abstract

Vocabulary is an important thing in learning a foreign language, without mastery of vocabulary, we will have difficulty in learning a language because vocabulary is a basic aspect of language that must be mastered before mastering language skills. The use of video from YouTube which is interesting for students is certainly a special attraction to enrich vocabulary for students. This study used a quantitative method with quasi-experimental and nonequivalent control group design. The samples were class of VIII.5 as experimental group consisted of 33 students and class of VIII.6 as control group consisted of 33 students. Technique of collecting the data used pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using t-test (paired sample and independent sample t-test) with SPSS v.25 program. The result of paired sample t-test in experimental group showed that t-obtained was 10,044 > t-table (df=32) was 2,036. Furthermore, the result of independent sample t-test showed that t-obtained was 0,1359 > t-table (df=64) was 1,997. It means that there was significant mean difference between experimental and control groups. The findings revealed that teaching by YouTube video was effective to enrich student’s vocabulary at the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Palembang.
