Abstract

Abstracts. This study examines how rubrics and peer assessment can be successfully applied in a classroom to maximize learning outcome. Students find obstacles in assessing the quality of their works.  Furthermore, the lecturer is not able to facilitate all students’ working process. Online platform is also used to cut the complex procedure which affects teaching and learning effectiveness. Data were collected through the result score of students’ works and questionnaires which were analyzed using T-Test SPSS software. The students submitted the work twice on the first work submission and the revision. After getting peer assessment, students revised the work and submitted the work. The finding revealed that rubrics and peer assessment help students to maximize their work. There are some significant progress from the two version of works. However, it needs preliminaries process and learning environmental readiness which limit them to be used in wider context. Keywords : Rubrics, Peer Assessment, Students’ work.

Abstract

During the time of COVID-19, students should study at home and class is conducted fully online. However, classes in higher education are mostly planned for Face-to-Face (F2F) learning. To deal with the situation, educators seek an alternative learning design to be implemented and it is expected to have either comparable or improved learning outcome. This study describes Online Learning (OL) design which assesses speaking performance in ESP classes. The participants of the study were students year 2019 (N=118) and students year 2020 (N=96) joining English for Electrical Engineering (EEE) which has the same syllabus and learning goal. A proposed Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction is analyzed, planned, implemented, and assessed its effectiveness of speaking activities which were done in the former-year-class (using F2F method) then applied in current class (using OL method). The result of F2F and Online Learning (OL) outcome were compared. To complete the analysis, a sequence of questionnaire was given to the students. The results indicates that using Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction, speaking activity in online learning classroom, achieved satisfactory result. Designing OL both synchronous and asynchronous method for speaking is as effective as F2F. This study may open another research prospect on barriers in OL, how to assess speaking performance via online platform, or others.

The data of this research are conversation transcripts of Australians consisting three males and one female and being analysed analytically to find the use of slang. Observational technique was used to gather the data. The researcher taped the conversation and transcribed them to make the data analysis easier. Slang is formed into a morphological and semantic process. The morphological processes consist of derivation, clipping, blending, acronym, and alliteration. The semantic process consists of generalization, metaphor, specialization, and arbitrary process. The use of slang affects the society in terms of social and communication function. Abstract

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) image building can be represented through many ways, one of them reflected on his international speeches. On this way, argumentation phases in the speeches can form social construct, self image, public opinion, new meaning and world-view. Based on critical linguistic point of view, word choice, sentence arrangement, and sentence pattern on speeches show a language expertise. This research aims at describing grammar used of SBY international speeches related with self image building. This research uses critical linguistics approach proposed by Fowler (1979) via Young and Harrison (2004: 3) which focuses on two metafunctions of Systemic Functional Linguistics Halliday, ideational and textual function. The source of data are nine texts of SBY's international speech in the year of 2011 chosen based on some criteria; updated topics, variation of topics, and abundant data. Then, data are chosen, noted, and identified based on formulation of the problems. On data analysis, Norman Fairclough framework applied in analyzing the data. Based on limitation of Halliday's metafunction, only were two levels chosen; textual analysis and social practice analysis. Besides, relevant studies were done to get detail and complete explanation. Based on data analysis, the result that can be emphasized is the grammar seen from word choice, clause and sentence element, figures of speech, pattern of clause change are means to convey new meaning based on who is the speaker and psychological effect shown to listeners. Thus, it can reveal the speaker purpose extensively and help to describe argumentative phase on speeches. Those three results of research are efforts to build SBY self image on language expertise. On this way, SBY can attract sympathy, therefore international cooperation can run smoothly.
