Abstract

This research aimed to improve students' speaking abilities at SMAN 12 Makassar by employing the Show and Tell Technique. The researchers applied the pre-experimental method with one group pretest-posttest design. Class XI MIPA 3 which consisted of 36 students was chosen as a sample in this research using cluster random sampling. To collect data, the researchers used the interview as a speaking test to know the students’ speaking ability in terms of accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility before and after administering the treatment. The result of this research indicated that the use of the Show and Tell Technique was effective in improving the students’ speaking ability. It was proved by the result of data analysis which showed that there was an improvement in the students’ scores in pre-test and post-test. In the post-test, the mean score of the student was 50.62. It was higher than the mean score in the pre-test which was 27.01. Therefore, the Show and Tell technique is effective to improve the students’ speaking ability in terms of accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the following problems: 1) students' difficulties in oral presentations in classroom interaction, 2) how students overcome the difficulties. This study used qualitative research methods.  This study  was  conducted  at  the  Faculty  of  Languages  and  Literatures, Makassar State University using interviews as a data collection instrument. Respondents to this study were 10 English students for the 2022/2023 academic year. Respondents were selected using a random sampling technique. The results of this study indicated that English Education students still face difficulties in oral presentations. The difficulties were classified into 2 categories, namely psychological factors and linguistic factor. Psychological factors consist of (1) anxiety, (2) nervousness, (3) unconfident, (4) understanding the topic, (5) keeping audience’s interest (6) blankness. Difficulties in linguistic factor consist of (1) delivering presentations in English.  The  ways  to  overcome  the  difficulties;  preparing  properly,  taking  deep  breaths, changing mindsets, reducing eye contact in dealing psychology problems, browsing and discussion in dealing understanding of topic, being attractive and interactive in dealing keeping audience interest, practicing English speaking and mixing languages in dealing delivering presentation in English, keep talking in dealing blankness. Keywords: Students Difficulties, Oral Presentation, Classroom Interaction.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the development of students' vocabulary mastery through English animation videos. The method used in this research was quantitative with a pre-experimental research design with a sample of 33 students XI IPS 1 using cluster random sampling technique. In obtaining the data, the researcher used the test as an instrument. The results of the data analysis showed that by using English animation video media, the student’s vocabulary mastery developed. It can be proven by the t-test value was lower than P (0.000 ˂ 0.05) which means (H0) of this research was rejected and (H1) was accepted. Therefore, it is concluded that English animation videos develop the vocabulary mastery of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Sidrap. Keywords: Vocabulary, English animation video

Abstract

This study aimed to know the types of speech errors made by students and the causes of speech errors. This research uses descriptive research with a qualitative approach and uses observation and interview instruments. The subjects in this study were students of class XI IPA 1 SMA Negeri 8 Makassar in the odd semester of the 2022/2023 academic year. Subjects were selected using the technique of purposive sampling to know the types of students' speech errors and the causes of the student’s speech errors. This research instrument is in the form of an observation and an interview. From the results of the data analysis, the researcher found several kinds of speech errors made by students when speaking and the causes of speech errors made by the students.

Abstract

This study’s goal was to identify the variations in listening strategies utilized by female and male students during the learning process. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Sungguminasa. To achieve the research objectives, this research was conducted using a comparative descriptive technique using a qualitative strategy. Students from SMP Negeri 1 Sungguminasa's class IX A made up the study population. The instruments employed in this study were questionnaire and interview. The collected research data were analyzed to describe the percentage, frequency and students’ statements in listening strategies. According to the findings, there are disparities in the listening strategies used by male and female students. The study findings revealed that 63% of female students used metacognitive, 68% cognitive, and 69% socio-affective strategies when listening, compared to 59% of male students who used metacognitive, 61% cognitive, and 37% socio-affective strategies.
