Abstract

Tulisan ini mengungkap aspek-aspek ketertindasan perempuan atas diri laki-laki yang dialami tokoh bernama Perawan Sunthi yang terdapat dalam lakon kentrung Tuhan Jawa Timur. Dalam cerita kentrung tersebut, Perawan Sunthi sebagai tokoh utama perempuan mengalami penindasan structural yang berfokus pada struktur patriarki. Struktur itu berupa oposisi biner yang menunjukkan ketidakadilan yaitu melemahkan posisi perempuan melalui pelabelan negatif terhadap perempuan sehingga meletakkan perempuan pada posisi inferior. Dengan menggunakan konsep oposisi biner akan menunjukkan bahwa struktur laki-laki maupun perempuan yang hierarkis akan menimbulkan bentuk- bentuk oposisi biner yang akan memberikan wacana ketidakadilan gender sehingga dapat mengakibatkan diskriminasi dan kekerasan terhadap perempuan. Dengan demikian tulisan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan wacana gender dalam situasi sosial yang lebih egaliter. This paper reveals woman oppression under man authority that experienced by Perawan Sunthi in kentrung character, Tuban, East Java. Ln Kentrung story, Perawan Sunthiasa main character has undergone structural oppression focusing on patriarchal structure. The injustice binary opposition structure weakens woman position by giving negative label on woman that puts the woman on inferior position. By using binary opposition concept will show that hierarchal man or woman structure makes binary opposition forms giving gender injustice discourse so that it causes discrimination and violence against woman. Therefore, this paper is expected to contribute gender discourse in more egalitarian social situation.

Abstract

A work of Arthur Golden is chosen because the story in translated novel Memoir of a geisha could enlighten about the importance of finding some one’s identity in order to make the character could run his life in pride and could give the guidance and meaning in his life. The purpose of writing is to uncover the process of hierarchy needs motivation of Sayuri’s actualization in Memoir of a geisha by Arthur Golden at the beginning, fighting era, and successful era of being a geisha. It uses structure and literary content approaches. Structureapproach analyzes intrinsic aspect like narrator and character whilst literary content approach uses extrinsic aspect of hierarchy needs of Abraham Maslow. Using literary content analysis, suffering and achievement of Maslow needs hierarchy of women character named Sayuri is shown. The main conclusion of the writing emphasizes that someone could give meaning and accepts himself for whom he is with forging inn his life to find out his identity.
