Abstract

Abstract

Microplastic contamination in groundwater has become an emerging environmental concern, particularly in areas surrounding landfill sites. This study aims to systematically review the occurrence, distribution, characteristics, and influencing factors of microplastics in groundwater near landfills. A systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA 2020 framework, selecting articles published between 2021 and 2025 from Scopus and Google Scholar based on defined criteria. A total of 18 relevant studies were analyzed. The results show that microplastic abundance in groundwater varies widely, ranging from less than 1 particle/L to more than 1000 particles/L. Most microplastics are smaller than 500 µm, with polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) as the dominant polymers. Fragments and fibers are the most common forms, while color variation reflects differences in waste composition and environmental conditions. Microplastic distribution is influenced by distance from landfills, well type, depth, and age. Wells located within 1 km of landfills and shallow dug wells are more vulnerable to contamination. Landfill leachate plays a key role in transporting microplastics into groundwater systems. Therefore, integrated management strategies based on the Source–Pathway–Receptor approach are essential to mitigate contamination and protect groundwater quality.

Abstract

Soil-bound heavy metals have been a major and growing environmental issue in recent decades of time, especially across developing nations in the context of rapid urbanization and industrial development. So far, very few studies have examined the spatial distribution of heavy metal contamination in agri-and/or industrial soils. The objective of this review article is to analyze, identify, evaluate and synthesize the existing knowledge on heavy metal contamination in soils across diverse industrial and agri-based land uses worldwide. The PRISMA 2020 method was used in this review article, involving the selection of 22 journal articles that met the criteria for further study and discussion. Heavy metal contamination in soils is due mainly to industrial activities (82% of the studies) and agricultural activities (64%), whereas both sources of contamination were identified in 45% of the studies. On the other hand, the well-known spatial analysis methods for the spatial distribution of soil heavy metals are kriging and IDW. For the industrial sector, individual heavy metals such as Pb, Cr, Ni, and Zn are of greater concern than in the agricultural sector. These metals accumulate in the environment and the food chain, causing short-term and long-term diseases. The choice of spatial analysis techniques to examine the distribution of heavy metals can be modified based on the availability and reliability of the data. The results provide great guidance to researchers and policymakers in designing and implementing effective strategies for prevention, surveillance, and reduction of exposure to heavy metals worldwide.

Abstract

Microplastics (MPs) are <5 mm synthetic polymer particles that are emerging contaminants and have been found widely in various water bodies. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play an important role in containing the release of MPs into the environment, but studies on the effectiveness of greywater-based WWTP, especially in dense urban areas such as Jakarta, are still limited. This research was conducted on a greywater WWTP with Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology in South Jakarta to analyze the abundance, efficiency of dispensation, and characteristics of microplastics based on shape, color, size, and material. Samples were taken from five points on weekdays and holidays, analyzed using NOAA methods and FTIR spectroscopy. The abundance of MPs at the inlet reached 942 particles/L (weekdays) and 675 particles/L (holidays), while at the outlet there were 290 particles/L and 211 particles/L, resulting in a dispensing efficiency of 69%. Five types of MPs (foam, fragment, fiber, film, microbead) were found with color variations (white-transparent, yellow, red, blue, green, black), as well as the content of PVFM, PVB, PVA, silicone, and POM polymers. This study contributes to the understanding of the distribution and character of MPs in greywater treatment systems that are still rarely explored, as well as supporting the development of mitigation strategies based on WWTP technology
