Abstract

Discourse markers is a word or a phrase that useful in communication. This paper investigates the use of discourse markers in research seminar. The objectives of this study are to find out the types and the functions of Discourse Markers used by the participants in the research seminar. The researcher analyzed the use of discourse markers based on Brinton Theory that are Brinton’s Inventory and Brinton’s Function Inventory. The results of the study contain two finding. First, there are eleven types of DMs that found based on Brinton’s Inventory, they are well, okay, and, if, but, because, I mean, oh, right, so and yes (DM yes is in Indonesian form like iya and in south Sulawesi form that is iye.). While, DMs that does not contain in Brinton’s Inventory, that is DM ya. Second, the function of discourse markers used by participants in research seminar have several functions that is based on the context. Based on Brinton’s Function Inventory, there are two function of discourse markers are textual function and interpersonal function. Keywords: Brinton theory, discourse markers, research seminar

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of important aspect before learning skill of English. Because of the students lack of vocabulary, the teacher should use a strategy to solve the problem. One of the strategies is using word wall website. This research aims to know the significant influence between the use of word wall website improve students’ vocabulary mastery. This research is done by using quantitative method with quasi experimental design. From the data analysis computed by using SPSS, then as the basis for decision that h0 is rejected and h1 is accepted. Based on the result of the research that has been done by the writer, the researcher concluded that using word wall website has a significant effect in improving students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Virtual education has exploded in recent years and become even more central to university and school life globally, especially with the advent of Covid-19. With the rise in popularity of virtual meetings, an increasing number of teachers use them to teach English speaking as an alternative to face-to-face instruction. This article examines the attitudes of teachers and the features of virtual meeting platforms that help and hinder the teaching of speaking skills. The study was conducted at several universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, based on a survey of twelve teachers. Seven teachers have recognized virtual meetings for their positive attitudes toward their use in teaching English speaking. Virtual meeting applications raise the most critical concerns regarding limited expression and limited variation. The most popular platforms among teachers are Zoom and Google Meet.

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the use of online authentic materials in teaching English at SMPN 2 Tinambung . The study aims to identify the types of online authentic materials used, teachers’ perceptions of their use, and the challenges faced by teachers in using them. Two English teachers were selected using purposive sampling. The results show that teachers used various types of online authentic materials such as YouTube videos, Google pictures, online articles, online news, podcasts, and web short stories. The teachers perceived online authentic materials to be similar to face-to-face authentic materials, but with different media. They were able to adapt the materials based on their needs and purposes. However, they preferred face-to-face meetings due to fewer problems. Challenges in the implementation of online authentic materials included internet connection, classroom management, and language difficulty.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan meningkatkan kompetensi guru bahasa Inggris di Pondok Pesantren Modern (PPM) Al-Ikhlas dalam memanfaatkan media pembelajaran Wordwall. Melalui sosialisasi aplikasi WordWall, kegiatan ini berhasil meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterampilan peserta dalam menciptakan pembelajaran yang lebih interaktif. Metode ceramah, diskusi, dan praktik langsung yang diterapkan terbukti efektif. Antusiasme peserta menunjukkan keberhasilan kegiatan ini dalam mencapai tujuannya. Kegiatan ini telah memberikan kontribusi positif bagi guru bahasa Inggris, terutama dalam hal penggunaan aplikasi WordWall untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran.

Abstract

This study explores how English for Nursing (EfN) lecturers experienced, adapted to, and reflected on online teaching practices during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a qualitative design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with EfN lecturers from higher education institutions. The findings revealed four major themes: (1) General Background, which highlighted lecturers’ diverse experiences and gradual adaptation to online instruction; (2) Teaching Practices and Strategies, showing that interactive and case-based learning were considered the most effective methods to engage nursing students virtually; (3) Challenges and Adaptation, which included issues such as limited digital access, low student participation, and difficulties in evaluating clinical communication skills; and (4) Reflection and Professional Insights, where lecturers reported personal and professional growth, emphasizing empathy, creativity, and flexibility as essential teaching qualities. The study concludes that online teaching not only transformed pedagogical practices but also redefined lecturers’ professional identities in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts.
