Abstract

This research is about the conception and practice of dowry for people in Bangkala village, and how it portrays the Islamic perspective of Bugis-Makassar culture. Researchers took two formulations of problems that will be discussed in this study. First, what is the conception and practice of dowry in Bangkala village? Secondly, how does the conception of dowry for Bangkala people portray the Islamic perspective and values and the richness of Bugis–Makassar culture? The type of research used is qualitative research with social welfare and sociological approach methods. The results of this study illustrate the conception of dowry in Bangkala village. Dowry determines the implementation of marriage. The Dowry (Mahar) is a form of absolute obligation by the male side to the female side. This is in line with the view in Islam that the dowry is a pure right of women, which is recommended to be given to them as an expression of men's desire for their future wives. The Dowry conception for the Bangkala people also portrays how the social stratification in Bugis – Makassar culture, also plays a big role in determining the amount and types of dowries given to the bride in Bangkala village wedding ceremonies. The dowry is not only a sign of the future husband's love and affection for the proposed wife, but it is also an appreciation symbol for the bride and her family in terms of their social stratification in the local society.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the tradition of determining the bhoka dowry in inter-social strata marriages within the Buton Tribe in Baubau City. In Buton’s customary law, society is divided into three social classes: Kaomu (nobility), Walaka (middle class), and Papara (commoners), each with different dowry values regulated by the Sultanate. Traditionally, marriages between Kaomu women and Papara men are prohibited and subject to customary fines. Using a descriptive qualitative method with an Islamic legal sociology approach—applying the theories of Living Law, Symbolic Interactionism, and ‘Urf—this research involved interviews with traditional, religious, and community leaders, as well as inter-class married couples, through snowball sampling, alongside observation and documentation. The findings reveal three main stages in determining the dowry: lukuti, pesoloi, and losa, which include a lineage tracing process (tiliki) by a spokesperson (tolowea) to decide dowry amounts and customary sanctions for inter-class unions. Community leaders’ perspectives on inter-social marriages are divided, though most view the traditional prohibitions as no longer relevant amid modern social dynamics. Furthermore, the dowry custom in inter-social marriages still functions as a living law within the Buton community, as it meets the core principles of the Living Law theory.

Abstract

The main issue in this research is: 1) The Role of the Makassar Children's Forum as a Pioneer and Reporter Agent. 2) The Effectiveness of the Children's Forum as a Pioneering Agent and Rapporteur. This research is qualitative with a sociological approach, using primary and secondary data sources collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Then the data processing and analysis techniques The process is carried out in three stages, namely: data reduction stage, data presentation stage, and data verification stage or drawing conclusions. The research results show that the Role of the Makassar Children's Forum as a Pioneer and Whistleblower Agent in Makassar City includes:1) The Makassar Children's Forum plays an important role as a pioneer agent and reporter in realizing the welfare of children and creating a child-friendly environment. As a pioneering agent, they initiate programs related to education, health, protection, and children's rights, as well as influencing policies related to violence and gender equality. As a reporting agent, they voiced children's rights by reporting violations such. as violence or exploitation to the authorities. Overall, the Makassar Children's Forum contributes greatly in creating positive changes and increasing public awareness of children's issues. 2) Makassar Children's Forum successfully involved its members in programs that had a positive impact on the community, as seen in the activities at the GTC Mall. Despite facing challenges such as negative stigma, time constraints, and personal data protection, the high dedication of members still drives the continuity of this forum. The role of an effective facilitator also contributes to this success. This forum continues to strive to overcome obstacles and is committed to creating better social changes and supporting a safe environment for children in Makassar. The implication of this research is that the Makassar Children's Forum needs to be more actively involved in policy planning related to children's rights, both at the city and provincial levels, through training and workshops to strengthen their role in advocating for children's rights. Collaboration with educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector is also important for education and awareness programs. The Makassar City Government must provide greater support through budgets and policies that support the role of the Children's Forum, while the community and families need to be encouraged to support the forum's activities and report violations of children's rights.
