Abstract

Topographic changes in open-pit mining areas occur rapidly due to overburden removal and ore extraction activities. These changes require an efficient monitoring method capable of providing fast, accurate, and reliable data to support production control, safety, and environmental management. This study aims to analyze topographic changes in an open-pit mining area using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based photogrammetry. Data acquistion was carried out using a UAV at a flight altitude of 120 meters with 80% overlap and 70% sidelap. The capture images were processed using Agisoft Metashape to generate orthomosaic and Digital Elevation Model (DEM), then analyzed using ArcGIS and Surpac to calculate changes in area and material volume. The results show that mining area increased from 4.8 hectares to 5.2 hectares within one month. The volume calculation indicates a cut value of 52,757.44 m3 and a fill value of 16,774.11 m3, with a net change -35,983.30 m3. Based on these results, UAV photogrammetry is proven to be effective in monitoring topographic changes in mining areas in a fast, accurate, and efficient manner compared to conventional surveying methods.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the estimated reserves of lateritic nickel ore and to define the open pit mining boundary based on the obtained estimation results at Block III Batuawu, PT. Tambang Bumi Sulawesi. The reserve estimation was carried out using the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method in Surpac 6.3 software by utilizing drilling data including assay, collar, geology, and survey data. The research stages consisted of database processing, ore body block modeling, application of Cut Off Grade (COG), and open pit design. The results show that the total resource is 1,369,191 tons with an average grade of 1.03% Ni and 31.56% Fe. After applying a COG of 1.3%, an extractable reserve of 404,771 tons was obtained with an average grade of 1.52% Ni and 21.55% Fe. Based on these results, an open pit design was developed with geotechnical parameters of 6 m bench height, 3 m bench width, and 55° slope angle, covering an area of 9.81 Ha with elevation ranges of 38.4–124.4 m. The required overburden removal is 964,421 tons with a stripping ratio of 1.6 : 1, indicating economically feasible mining conditions.

Abstract

Medium-scale mining in Indonesia faces challenges in the digital era, making digital transformation and smart mining essential. This study at PT. Tambang Bumi Sulawesi aims to assess digital readiness, identify supporting and inhibiting factors, and formulate strategies toward smart mining. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and literature review, then analyzed using the Digital Readiness Assessment and the Digital Maturity Model (DMM) with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The findings indicate that PT. Tambang Bumi Sulawesi is at a Moderate level (Emerging–Defined) of digital readiness. Its main strengths include digital record-keeping, data storage systems, and management support, while weaknesses lie in limited infrastructure, low digital literacy among employees, minimal IoT utilization, and the absence of a digital roadmap. Recommendations include strengthening infrastructure, improving human resource competencies, developing a long-term digital strategy, and optimizing ERP and big data to achieve sustainable smart mining.
