Abstract

Sanggar Kegiatan Belajar is one of the non-formal and informal educational institutions (PNFI) that organizes learning activities for the equivalency program. The problem that occurs in Purwokerto SKB is that the age of the learning citizens in a study group is various, each has different needs so that the sustainability of the program is difficult to maintain. Heterogeneous input of students and most of them come from the lower middle economic class and including families of recipients of the PKH program from the government is also one of the triggers for problems in learning. In addition, the absence of English language training is one of the problems that occur in SKB considering that English can be used as a plus point for students to get a job. The English language skills of the Paket C (SMA Equivalent) equivalency program students are still very low as evidenced by the average score of the final even semester test for the 2018/2019 academic year, which is 56.17 and the average score of UNBK in 2018 was 34.19. The lack of facilities and infrastructure that support the teaching and learning process of English is part of the causes of students' low English proficiency apart from input factors, student characteristics, interest and student motivation to learn. The use of learning methods that are fun, interactive, exploratory, systematic, creative and innovative is very helpful in improving students' English skills. The 2C method is a combination of two methods, namely the cooperative learning method and the contextual teaching and learning method. In this Community Partnership Program, the 2C method was used to train Paket C program students in improving their English language skills. Moreover, this Community Partnership Program was aimed to provide training to students in increasing their interest and motivation to learn English. The result of the training revealed that there was a significant improvement in students’ learning interest and motivation as well as their English performance.

Abstract

The rapid growth of computer technology has transformed education, offering new ways to enrich conventional learning processes. This article presents the application of Game-Based Learning (GBL) to improve the teaching of English. GBL integrates fun and learning, appealing to students through game-like approaches that promote communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. This narrative literature review examines how GBL improves student motivation and achievement, particularly in developing speaking competencies. It also delves deeper into the questions of teacher preparedness and technological availability encountered in the application of GBL. The study read studies on theoretical foundations of GBL based on experiential learning and constructivism, as well as its classroom applications in English. The results were that GBL positively influences student motivation and teamwork, reducing anxiety, rendering learning more enjoyable and efficient. However, the success of GBL depends on the coordination of curriculum goals and the overcoming of resource and training barriers. Overall, GBL has the potential to contribute significantly toward English language learning through facilitating an interactive learning setting. Teachers should use GBL to assure learning outcomes through carefully crafted games. Next study should focus on creating effective GBL language skill evaluation materials.

Abstract

The current narrative literature review aimed to investigate the use of Chunk-Based CLT as a pedagogical technique to enhance the fluency of EFL students from Indonesia. Even though the students have been receiving formal English education in all stages from primary to tertiary levels, many still experience difficulties in their fluency due to the high cognitive load and their tendency to translate from word to word. In order to explore this problem, the literature synthesis was performed using academic works related to formulaic language and communicative pedagogy. It turned out that lexical chunks (prefabricated formulaic sequences) help learners acquire important cognitive shortcuts and minimize unnatural pausing, increase speech rate and reduce the anxiety about making grammatical mistakes during language learning in a foreign language. Besides, engaging the learners with these linguistic units in communicative activities is beneficial for producing natural speech. Thus, the pedagogical relevance of this method of instruction in EFL context is highly significant. Based on the findings made, this paper shows that the chunk-based instruction is useful in bridging the fluency gap. To continue this research, further empirical studies need to be performed experimentally.
