Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to identify the derivational affixes in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” novel. The data was all the complex word in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” novel. This study focused on analyzing the types and the process of derivational affixes that were found in the data source. This study used qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. The data were analyzed based on the theory proposed by Katamba (1993) to solve the problem which about the types of derivational affixes. Theory that proposed by Fromkin et al (2013) was used to solve the problem about the hierarchical structure of derivational affixes. This study found 858 data that contained derivational affixes. Derivational prefixes were found in 84 data with percentage 10% such as prefix de-, dis-, en-, im-, in-, ir-, mis-, re- and un-. Then, derivational suffixes were found in 774 data with percentage 90% such as suffix –able, -al, -ance, -ant, -ate, -e, -ed, -en, -ence, -er, -ful, -fy, -ic, -ing, -ion, -ish, -ism, -ity, -ive, -ize, -less, -ly, -ment, -ness, -or, -ous, and –y. This study concluded that derivational suffix was the most dominant type of derivational affixes that found in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” novel. Keywords: derivational, affixes, types Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi derivational affixes dalam novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah semua kata-kata kompleks dalam novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. Penelitian ini berfokus pada analisis jenis dan proses dari derivational affixes yang terdapat pada sumber data. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menganalisis data. Data dianalisis berdasarkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Katamba (1993) untuk menyelesaikan masalah tentang jenis-jenis derivational affixes. Teori yang dikemukakan oleh Fromkin et al (2013) digunakan untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan tentang struktur hierarki dari derivational affixes. Penelitian ini menemukan 858 data yang mengandung derivational affixes. Derivational prefixes ditemukan pada 84 data dengan persentase 10% yaitu prefix de-, dis-, en-, im-, in-, ir-, mis-, re- dan un-. Abstract

This research discusses about affixes in selected song lyrics of Westlife. The researcher analysed twenty song’s lyrics of Westlife which is used as data source. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The purpose of this research is to identify the derivational affixes found in selected song lyrics of Westlife. The result of this research shows 78 data of derivational affixes were found in selected song lyrics of Westlife. They were categorized into prefix and suffix. Prefix category found from the data source are prefix im-and mis-. Meanwhile, suffixes found are –ly, -ize, -ship, -ish, -ion, -ness, -less, -ful, -ous, -ence, -ing, and -en. All affixes found are classified into derivational prefix are im-, and mis- and derivational suffixes are –ly, -ize, -ship, -ish, -ion, -ness, -less, -ful, -ous, -ence, -ing, and -en. Those affixes give explanation about forming new word and new meaning in Westlife selected song’s lyrics.

Abstract

The use of two languages within a conversation has been known as code switching. This study analyzed the code switching phenomenon as found in Maudy Ayunda Music YouTube Channel. The goals are to analyze the types and functions of code switching. Poplack’s model (1980) is applied to identify the types of code switching; meanwhile, for the code switching function, it applied Appel & Muysken’s (1987) theory. The method of descriptive qualitative is used to identify the data. In collecting the data this study applied the observation method and note-taking techniques. Three chosen videos on Maudy Ayunda Music YouTube channel are used as the data source. Furthermore, the result of the study is presented in formal and informal method. All types of code switching were found; there were inter-sentential switching, tag switching and intra-sentential switching. And then, all functions of code switching also found; there were metalinguistic function, phatic function, directive function, poetic function, expressive function and referential function. Abstract

This study discusses the types and reasons of code-switching occurred during conversations between Agnes Monica and Daniel Mananta on the Daniel Mananta Network Podcast. This study aims to answer research problems, namely (1) What types of code switching are used by Agnes Monica and Daniel Mananta on the Daniel Mananta Network (2) What are the reasons behind the occurrence of code switching by Agnes Monica and Daniel Mananta on the Daniel Mananta Network. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method by classifying and describing the types of code switching based on the theory from Appel and Muysken (1987) and the reasons behind the occurrence of code switching based on Hoffman's theory (1991). The result shows that 90 data were found, 6 data of tag switching, 70 data of intra-sentential switching, and 13 data of inter-sentential switching. Intra-sentential switching is the most dominant types found in data source. Meanwhile, tag switching is the least. Moreover seven reasons motivating code switching were found in Podcast Daniel Mananta Network. Where talking about particular topic is the most dominant reasons found. It's because Agnes Monica and Daniel Mananta occasionally favor using one language over another while discussing a certain subject. In a language other than his native tongue, a speaker may occasionally feel more at ease and free to express his or her emotional feelings. The character can grab the audience's attention and add interest to the narrative by using code switching.

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the types of coordinating conjunction in compound sentences found in novel entitled “It Ends with Us” by Colleen Hoover. The aims of this study is to find out the types of coordinating conjunction in compound sentences. In this study, it used a descriptive qualitative method in describing the types of coordination in compound sentences based on the theory that proposed by Quirk and Greenbaum (1973). The total data found were 160 data (100%). In details, the percentage of the data syndetic coordination appears 134 data or 82%. The data consist of 71 data or 44% that used and as coordinator, 35 data or 21% that used but as coordinator, 15 data or 9% that used so as coordinator, and 13 data or 8% that used two coordinator of syndetic coordination. In addition, the percentage of the data asyndetic coordination appears 24 data or 16%. The data consist of 23 data or 15% that used coma (,) as coordinator, and 1 data or 1% that used semicolon (;) as coordinator. The rest is 2 data or 2% consist of both coordinator between syndetic and asyndetic coordination in compound sentence.

Abstract

This research analyzed the types of noun-forming derivational suffixes found in football news articles. The document method is used to collect data, qualitative analysis to identify the dominant types of suffixes and their context of use, while quantitative analysis to determine the frequency of suffix usage. These methods provide a comprehensive understanding of noun-forming suffixes, taking into account meaning and accurate data. This research used the theory proposed by Hamawand (2011) and the supporting theory from Lieber (2009). A total of 221 data of noun-forming suffixes were found, with 156 (70%) verbal root data, 46 (21%) adjective root data, and 19 (8%) nominal base data. The analysis shows that verbal root suffix is the most common type of noun-forming suffix found in football news. The dominance is because of the use of verbs that describe an activity or action in the match involving the team or players in the match. Although verbal root only has five suffixes, but it dominates in football news texts.

Abstract

Characterization is the way that can be used to analyze characters in a movie. This study raises two problems, namely what the types of characters and how is the characterization of the characters from Cruella movie. The theory is taken from Tarigan (1985) and Warren and Wellek (1962). The data source of this research was the movie Cruella by Craig Gillespie. The data were collected through qualitative research method. Observation and note taking are used to collect the data. The result shows that there are 12 characters appear in the movie. Most of the characters have complete aspects of characterization, those are physiological aspect, psychological aspect and sociological aspect. The rest of them only have one or two aspects because they are as supporting characters who appear only several times in the movie.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the types and analyze the meaning of figurative language that appeared in six songs by The Weeknd. This study used a qualitative method by using two theories. The first theory is about the theory of figurative language by X. J. Kennedy (1979), which is used to identify the types of figurative language in four songs by The Weeknd. Meanwhile, another theory is the theory of meaning by Leech (1981), which is used to analyze the meaning of figurative language in four songs by The Weeknd. The data used in this study was taken from four songs by The Weeknd. In collecting the data, documentation techniques were used in this study. The study's findings indicate that The Weeknd uses four different types of figurative language in four of his songs: simile, personification, hyperbole, and metaphor.There are 8 figurative languages appeared in the song lyrics. one (1) lyric is identified as simile, one lyric (1) is identified as personification, and five (5) lyrics are identified as as hyperbole, and one (1) lyric is identified as metaphor. Hyperbole is the highest dominant type and appears in four of The Weeknd's songs.
