Abstract

An interest of individual preferences which can be represented in numerical ways known as the utility. While others stated it as a matter of subjective feeling that being felt in order to pursue and to maximize the certain level of satisfaction and personal well-being. According to neoclassical theory, this happened due to the contraction consumer preferences between things/products/services that available in the market. Furthermore, the ultimate ends that have been proposed are that the industry/market is spiritually neutral. On the other hand, some of Muslim scholars argue that spiritual or religious values are what defines an individual as a human, while all conducted of consumption is abide by ethics and religious values, which will not forsake others for personal gains. The integration of religious aspect in pursuing of maximization of utility is known as maslahah (i.e. well-being). A further discussion that arises is in Islamic economics framework, does individual orients solely to maximize their utility, even in the sense of maslahah is considered. Neoclassical claims that to interpret the utility, there are two headings is considered, they are prediction approach and prescription approach. The debate on neoclassical and Islamic economics perspectives might contradict one to another, but none of it is at absolute truth, the theory itself is still developing due to different assumptions and circumstances that present at that time. Furthermore, the revisiting theory of maqasidh al-sharia (i.e. the objective of Islamic Laws) also provides a different point of view regarding the debatable utility between neoclassical and Islamic economics. In pursuance of better understanding of utility, this article aims to redefine the consumer utility in Islamic economics framework. It can be concluded that the definition of utility under Islamic perspective as the act to seek self-actualization of benefit which collide to the benefit of others in pursuing of enhancement of dual dimensions objectives of present and hereafter. A strong point that being found that in order to maximize the utility/maslahah must consider the possibility of misleading the genuine motive of utility, which is not adjusting it under social pressures. The misleading act of such is categorized as the act of falsification of preferences.

Abstract

The trend of the flexing phenomenon, especially on social media, is currently causing various reactions, one of which is the tendency to consume and use various luxury facilities. In consumer behavior, this phenomenon is referred to as Conspicuous Consumption. In today's modern world, it happens not only to upper-class consumers, but also to everyone in the community with various goals, including the goals of acquiring social status, prestige, or wealth. For lower-middle households, of course, this is a problem, so financial planning is needed. This study aims to explore the perspective of Maqasid Sharia in financial planning for Muslim families as a solution to the Conspicuous Consumption phenomenon. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a library research approach. Data were obtained from official reports as well as other literature from journals, books and websites. The results of this study indicate that financial planning based on the Maqasid Sharia hierarchy, namely Dharurriyah, Hajiyyah and Tahsiniyyah can prevent the phenomenon of Conspicuous Consumption in Muslim households. In addition, Islamic consumption which prohibits Israf and aims to achieve Maslahah is a contradiction to Conspicuous Consumption. Good financial planning will ultimately bridge Muslim families to achieve prosperity in this world and the hereafter. The study provides model that can be used to refine existing models and frameworks, thereby enhancing their effectiveness and applicability in real-world scenarios.

Abstract

The number of national-level zakat institutions has decreased since the implementation of Zakat Law Number 23 of 2011, indicating a more organized zakat administration. Nevertheless, many muzakki still opt not to distribute their zakat through the existing Zakat Management Organizations (OPZ) in Indonesia. Instead, they prefer to directly give zakat to their chosen mustahik. Despite the importance of paying zakat through zakat institutions, it is crucial to comprehend individuals' preferences in this regard. The main objective of this study is to investigate the factors influencing muzakki's preferences for zakat institutions, including trust, word of mouth, and online services. The research is based on empirical data gathered from 132 respondents in Central Java. Multiple linear regression was employed to test the study hypotheses. The findings reveal that all the examined variables, namely trust, word of mouth, and internet services, significantly influence muzakki's choices for zakat institutions. Further analysis indicates that among these factors, online services play the most significant role in shaping muzakki's preferences. The limitation of the study lies in the research sample, where Indonesia consists of 34 provinces and only 1 province is involved in this study. This study presents a summary of the relevance of online services in zakat institutions, as previous research on muzakki preferences for zakat payment has never included the online service factor. This research has managerial implications, particularly for Zakat Institutions. The findings will further assist fundraising strategies to enhance financial service and introduce innovative approaches to reach muzakki preferences in zakat payment.

Abstract

IntroductionEconomic turbulence remains a persistent challenge globally, as evidenced by historical crises such as the Great Depression, the 2007–2009 Global Financial Crisis, Brexit, and the COVID-19 pandemic. These events have underscored the necessity for resilient and ethically sound financial frameworks. Islamic finance has gained attention as a viable alternative financial system, potentially offering enhanced stability during periods of economic instability.ObjectivesThis study systematically reviews existing literature on the development and responses of Islamic finance during various economic disturbances. It aims to identify how Islamic financial institutions adapt their strategies, products, and services in response to crises, and highlight areas for future research.MethodThe systematic literature review method was used, analyzing 76 academic articles published between 2007 and 2023 from high-quality journals (Q1 and Q2) indexed in the Scopus database. Articles were carefully screened using defined inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure relevance to economic crises and Islamic finance.ResultsFindings reveal that Islamic financial markets and Islamic banking were the predominant topics, demonstrating varied responses to economic shocks. Islamic banks, employing profit-loss sharing models, exhibited resilience during economic downturns, though inefficiencies in profitability and capitalization were noted. Islamic financial markets, characterized by ethical investments and low leverage, provided diversification advantages but remained vulnerable due to limited portfolio diversity. Additionally, Islamic social finance tools such as zakat and waqf were beneficial in supporting economic recovery, especially during the COVID-19 crisis.ImplicationsThe study suggests that governments and policymakers should promote profit-loss sharing models in Islamic banking and encourage greater diversification in Islamic financial markets to enhance resilience. Additionally, Islamic social finance should be further integrated into economic recovery strategies to mitigate crisis impacts.Originality/NoveltyThis research uniquely synthesizes insights into the adaptive responses of Islamic financial institutions across historical economic crises, addressing a significant knowledge gap in Islamic finance literature. By providing comprehensive future research directions, it contributes valuable guidance for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers aiming to develop sustainable and resilient financial systems.
