Abstract

This study aims to find out what discourse markers are usually contained in an utterance, then what is the function of using these discourse markers, and also the reasons for using discourse markers that occur in Adele's video interview with Vogue. The data used in this study was obtained from the YouTube video content belonging to the Vogue channel called 73 Questions. As a basis for this research, there are several theories used, namely the theory of Fraser (2009), Dumlao and Wilang (2019), and Schiffrin (1987) in Cambridge (2018). In analyzing the data, the author uses a qualitative method with a case study research design. Based on the results of the analysis obtained by the author, it was found that 373 data were showing the use of discourse markers consisting of 26 different discourse markers. The 26 markers consist of 5 different types of discourse markers which include contrastive discourse markers, elaborative discourse markers, inferential discourse markers, temporal discourse markers, and spoken discourse markers. Furthermore, the dominant types of discourse markers that occur are elaborative discourse markers occur 118 times and spoken discourse markers occur 130 times. As for its function, there are 8 functions, namely, connecting markers, managing information, response markers, the cause, the effect marker, a temporal adverb, a marker of time, a sign of rejection or contrast, as well as a marker that describes the closeness between the topic of the question and the idea. And the reason found for the use of discourse markers is to make the conversation that occurs flow, not stiff, natural, and meaningful between Adele and the interviewer.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing swear words found in animated situational comedy Family Guy, Season 15, Episode 15 and 17. The study aims to answer three research questions, i.e., the kinds of swear words, the reasons of using swear words, and the speaker-listener relation that elicits swear words. The theories used in analyzing the data are the theory of Michael Swan (1995) and Andrew Gray (2000). This study uses descriptive qualitative method. Thirteen data that contained swear words were found. Of these data, six kinds of swear words were found. They were exclamation of surprise, exclamation of annoyance, surprised question, insult, rejection, and intensifying adjective. There were two reasons that made the characters use swear words, i.e., to identify certain social class and to express emotion. However, the speaker-listener relation that made the speakers use swear words varied between relatives, friends, and strangers. Keywords: swear word, animated sitcom, Family Guy

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify the types of translation shifts present in the Eragon movie and to determine their frequency. The data will be collected from the dialogues in the movie. As a basis for this research, there is translation shift theory used, namely the translation shift theory of Catford (1965. In analyzing the data, the author uses a qualitative research methodology with a case study research design. This research identified translation shift occurrence in 599 dialogues and selected 12 samples for detailed analysis and discussion. The findings of the analysis indicated the presence of both Level Shift and Category Shift in the dialogues. The Level Shift is based on grammatical structure, they are Present Perfect Tense, Past Perfect Tense, Past Continuous Tense and Future Tense. The second shift found is Category Shift which consists of four types, they are Structure Shift, Unit Shift, Class Shift and Intra-System Shift. Overall, the results of this research demonstrate the occurrence of both Level Shift and Category Shift in the Eragon movie.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze politeness strategies of request found in the utterances in Ballerina movie. It intends to answer three (3) research questions, namely the types of politeness strategies of request, the reason of using the politeness strategies of request, and the relation among the characters that use politeness strategies of request in Ballerina movie. The theory used in analyzing the data is the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Fourteen (14) cases of politeness strategies of request are found. Five (5) data contain bald on record strategies, four (4) data contain positive politeness strategies, two (2) data contain negative politeness strategies, and three (3) data contain off record strategies. The reasons why the characters use a politeness strategy depend on the type of politeness strategy that they use. The reason why the characters use bald on record strategy is because they want the hearers to do what they want immediately. The reason why the characters use positive politeness strategy is because they do not attempt to keep their distance with the hearers. Then the reason why the characters use negative politeness strategy is because they intend to ask the hearers to do something in a polite way. Finally, the reason the characters use off record strategy is because they want the hearers to be sensitive in order to understand what the speakers want. Regarding the last research question, which is the relations among the characters, the result shows that this also varies. The relations of the characters who use politeness strategy of request can be between close friends, teacher and student, people who have the same age, people who just met, owner and worker, or family who are not close with each other.
