Abstract

This study aims to find out what discourse markers are usually contained in an utterance, then what is the function of using these discourse markers, and also the reasons for using discourse markers that occur in Adele's video interview with Vogue. The data used in this study was obtained from the YouTube video content belonging to the Vogue channel called 73 Questions. As a basis for this research, there are several theories used, namely the theory of Fraser (2009), Dumlao and Wilang (2019), and Schiffrin (1987) in Cambridge (2018). In analyzing the data, the author uses a qualitative method with a case study research design. Based on the results of the analysis obtained by the author, it was found that 373 data were showing the use of discourse markers consisting of 26 different discourse markers. The 26 markers consist of 5 different types of discourse markers which include contrastive discourse markers, elaborative discourse markers, inferential discourse markers, temporal discourse markers, and spoken discourse markers. Furthermore, the dominant types of discourse markers that occur are elaborative discourse markers occur 118 times and spoken discourse markers occur 130 times. As for its function, there are 8 functions, namely, connecting markers, managing information, response markers, the cause, the effect marker, a temporal adverb, a marker of time, a sign of rejection or contrast, as well as a marker that describes the closeness between the topic of the question and the idea. And the reason found for the use of discourse markers is to make the conversation that occurs flow, not stiff, natural, and meaningful between Adele and the interviewer.

Abstract

This research focuses on annotated translation. The object of the research is a fairy tale titled Thumbelina, written by Hans Christian Andersen. The purpose of this research are (1) to attain information concerning the difficult problems faced by the researches during the translation process of the source text; (2) to give solutions to the difficult problems. The researchers took eight out of forty-four difficult problems which consists of words, phrases, idiom, and sentences. Those difficulties were solved by referring to translation procedures as stated by Peter Newmark, and supported by monolingual, bilingual, and thesaurus dictionaries ABSTRAK Penelitian ini berfokus pada terjemahan beranotasi. Objek dari penelitian ini merupakan sebuah dongeng berjudul Thumbelina, dikarang oleh Hans Christian Andersen. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mendapatkan informasi mengenai problem sulit yang dihadapi oleh para peneliti selama proses penerjemahan naskah sumber; (2) memberikan solusi pada masalah-masalah sulit. Peneliti mengambil delapan dari empat puluh empat masalah sulit yang terdiri dari kata-kata, frasa, idiom, dan kalimat. Kesulitan-kesulitan itu diatasi dengan cara merujuk pada prosedur penerjemahan sebagaimana dinyatakan oleh Peter Newmark, dibantu oleh kamus-kamus eka-bahasa, dwi-bahasa dan thesaurus.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify the types of translation shifts present in the Eragon movie and to determine their frequency. The data will be collected from the dialogues in the movie. As a basis for this research, there is translation shift theory used, namely the translation shift theory of Catford (1965. In analyzing the data, the author uses a qualitative research methodology with a case study research design. This research identified translation shift occurrence in 599 dialogues and selected 12 samples for detailed analysis and discussion. The findings of the analysis indicated the presence of both Level Shift and Category Shift in the dialogues. The Level Shift is based on grammatical structure, they are Present Perfect Tense, Past Perfect Tense, Past Continuous Tense and Future Tense. The second shift found is Category Shift which consists of four types, they are Structure Shift, Unit Shift, Class Shift and Intra-System Shift. Overall, the results of this research demonstrate the occurrence of both Level Shift and Category Shift in the Eragon movie.

Abstract

This research focuses on translation of idioms in a children's fairy tale with a title of The Ugly Duckling, written by Hans Christian Andersen from Denmark. In this fairy tale there are many interesting idioms to study. However, in the translation process there are challenges faced by the author, namely 1) Idioms do not have a direct equivalent in the target language. 2) Selects the right vocabulary in the target language so that it can be accepted among young readers. The research method in this journal article is a qualitative descriptive research methodology. The results of this study are as follows: produce translations that are commensurate with the source language by using free and communicative translation methods (Newmark, 1988). Even though the grammatical structure of the source text is not the same as the target text, the meaning contained in the target text is commensurate with the source text. Use simple vocabulary in the Target Language that is easy to understand by young age target readers.
